CNN Fact-Checker Rebuts Trump’s ‘Everything Is Cheaper’ Claim… New Data Tells a Very Different Story

A fresh fact-check by CNN has challenged US President Donald Trump’s recent claim that “everything is cheaper” under his administration, arguing that official inflation data paints a much different picture.

Speaking at a public event earlier this week, Trump highlighted falling egg prices as evidence that his economic policies had reduced the cost of living across the United States.”Eggs are much lower than they were when we first started, and that’s true with everything else,” Trump said while discussing food prices and inflation.

However, according to CNN fact-checker Daniel Dale, the president’s broader claim does not align with official economic data.

CNN Analysis Finds Most Prices Have Increased

In his review, Dale, along with colleague Matt Stiles, analysed 332 products and product categories using data from the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

Their findings showed that far more goods and services have increased in price than decreased since Trump returned to office in January 2025.

According to the analysis, nearly five times as many product categories recorded price increases compared to those that became cheaper during the same period.

Egg Prices Have Fallen, But They Are an Exception

Egg prices became a major political issue in the United States during and after the 2024 presidential election, largely because of supply disruptions caused by a widespread bird flu (H5N1) outbreak that led to the loss of millions of poultry birds.

As production gradually recovered, egg prices declined significantly.

CNN’s analysis noted that eggs were the largest price decline among all categories reviewed.

In fact, researchers found that no other item recorded a price drop even half as large as the decline seen in egg prices.

Inflation Remains Elevated Across Key Sectors

The report highlighted that several major household spending categories have continued to become more expensive.

According to the CPI data cited in the analysis:

  Overall consumer prices increased by 4.3%
• Food prices rose 4.2%
• Housing costs climbed 4.6%
• Energy prices increased 13.1%
• Medical services rose 4.9%
• Clothing prices went up 4.5%
• Childcare costs increased 3.8%

The analysis also noted that products such as beef, coffee, and lettuce remain among the grocery items that have seen notable price increases.

Debate Over Inflation Continues

Inflation and the cost of living remain central issues in American politics, with both the White House and critics offering competing interpretations of economic trends.

While the Trump administration has pointed to lower egg prices and easing inflation in certain areas as signs of progress, independent analyses based on Consumer Price Index data suggest that many everyday expenses for American households continue to trend upward.

The debate is expected to remain a key political issue as the administration continues to defend its economic record.
