BCCI Confirms Gautam Gambhir Will Miss Zimbabwe Tour; New Head Coach Named for India’s ODI Series
With Gautam Gambhir unavailable for the upcoming tour, the BCCI has appointed an experienced replacement to oversee Team India during the ODI series in Zimbabwe.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially confirmed that Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir will not travel with the squad for the upcoming ODI series against Zimbabwe. In his absence, the Indian cricket board has appointed a stand-in head coach to guide the team during the tour.
The announcement puts an end to speculation over Gambhir’s availability and provides clarity ahead of India’s preparations for the limited-overs assignment.
Replacement to Lead the Coaching Staff
To ensure continuity within the team’s support staff, the BCCI has entrusted the responsibility to an experienced coach who will take charge of the squad for the Zimbabwe series. The temporary appointment is aimed at maintaining stability while Gambhir remains unavailable.

The stand-in coach will work closely with the players and existing support staff, focusing on preparations, match strategy and player development throughout the tour.
Why Gautam Gambhir Is Missing the Tour
While confirming Gambhir’s absence, the BCCI stated that the decision was made due to his unavailability during the scheduled tour. However, the board has indicated that this is only a temporary arrangement and does not affect his position as India’s full-time head coach.
Gambhir is expected to resume his coaching duties for India’s upcoming international assignments after the Zimbabwe series concludes.

Opportunity for Young Indian Players
India’s tour of Zimbabwe is expected to feature a mix of emerging talents and established performers. Such bilateral series have often served as an opportunity for young cricketers to gain valuable international experience and impress the selectors.
The temporary coaching change is unlikely to alter the team’s broader plans, with the focus remaining on building bench strength and preparing players for bigger challenges ahead.
BCCI Looks to Ensure Smooth Transition
By announcing the replacement well before the start of the series, the BCCI has ensured that the team can prepare without uncertainty. The move reflects the board’s intent to maintain consistency in coaching standards while allowing Gambhir to return when available.
Fans will now be eager to see how the Indian squad performs under the stand-in coach as the team aims for another successful overseas campaign.
