AB de Villiers ‘Surprised’ by Rishabh Pant’s India Test Recall, But Says One Thing Could Change Everything…

India’s squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka has sparked plenty of discussion among cricket fans, and one of the biggest talking points is the return of Rishabh Pant. While several former cricketers welcomed the squad announced by the BCCI, former South Africa captain AB de Villiers admitted that Pant’s selection came as a surprise considering his recent performances.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, AB de Villiers said that Pant did not appear to be at his confident best during the Indian Premier League (IPL). According to the legendary batter, the wicketkeeper looked short of energy and rhythm, raising questions over both his fitness and mindset heading into the Test series.

However, de Villiers also expressed confidence that international cricket often brings out the best in experienced players. He believes representing India could help Pant rediscover the aggressive and fearless approach that has made him one of the country’s most impactful Test cricketers over the years.

Pant’s Return Adds Experience to India’s Test Setup

Despite concerns over his recent form, Pant remains one of India’s biggest match-winners in the longest format. His ability to change the course of a Test match with attacking strokeplay and sharp wicketkeeping makes him an important member of the squad led by Shubman Gill.

The upcoming series against Sri Lanka carries added importance as it forms part of the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. With both teams looking to improve their standings, every victory will be crucial in the race to reach the WTC final.

Bumrah and Jadeja’s Comeback Delights de Villiers

While Pant’s inclusion surprised him, de Villiers was delighted to see senior stars Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja return to the Test squad.

He described Bumrah as one of the finest fast bowlers in world cricket, adding that opposition batters always have to stay alert whenever the pace spearhead is fit and available. Bumrah’s participation, however, remains subject to fitness clearance from the Board.

The former South African skipper also praised Jadeja’s value to India’s Test side, saying a fresh and fully fit all-rounder significantly strengthens the team’s balance with both bat and ball.

New Faces Offer More Variety

De Villiers also highlighted uncapped all-rounder Saransh Jain, comparing his skill set to Washington Sundar. He believes Jain’s off-spin could provide captain Shubman Gill with another bowling option during the middle overs, especially on turning tracks in Sri Lanka.

With Kuldeep Yadav, Jadeja and other spin options already in the squad, India’s bowling attack appears well-equipped to exploit subcontinental conditions.

India Eye Crucial WTC Points

The two-match Test series will be played in Galle and Colombo, where spin is expected to play a major role. India currently sit fifth in the World Test Championship standings, while Sri Lanka are close behind, making the contest even more significant.

With experienced players returning, promising youngsters getting opportunities and Gill beginning a new chapter as Test captain, India will be aiming to start the Sri Lanka tour on a strong note and collect valuable WTC points.
