The excitement surrounding Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has received another major boost. The upcoming action drama will be released in IMAX, giving fans an opportunity to experience the superstar’s return as Muthuvel Pandian on the premium large-screen format.

Written and directed by Nelson, Jailer 2 is scheduled to arrive in theatres on October 15.

The IMAX announcement adds another attraction to a sequel that already brings back several familiar faces from the blockbuster Jailer, while introducing a number of new cast members.

Jailer 2 joins growing list of Tamil films getting IMAX releases

With its premium-format release confirmed, Jailer 2 becomes one of the latest Tamil films to make its way to IMAX screens.

The format could be particularly significant for a large-scale action film such as Jailer 2, with its visuals, action sequences and soundtrack expected to play a major role in the theatrical experience.

The film’s cinematography is handled by Vijay Kartik Kannan, who also worked on the first Jailer.

His previous credits include Doctor, Gulu Gulu and Daaku Maharaaj, among other projects.

Rajinikanth returns as Muthuvel Pandian

At the centre of the sequel is Rajinikanth, returning as Muthuvel Pandian, the character he played in the 2023 film.

The original Jailer saw Muthuvel, a retired police officer, pulled into a dangerous conflict after events involving his family. Rajinikanth’s portrayal became one of the major talking points surrounding the film.

The sequel will reunite him with several actors from the first instalment.

Ramya Krishnan, Mohanlal, Shivarajkumar, Mirnaa Menon, Yogi Babu and Jaffer Sadiq are among the returning cast members.

Jailer 2 adds several new names to its cast

Alongside the returning stars, Jailer 2 is also expanding its ensemble.

The sequel features Vidya Balan, SJ Suryah, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Bagavathi Perumal, Tamizh, Jatin Sarna, Meghana Raj Sarja and Bjorn Surrao, among others.

With actors from multiple Indian film industries joining the project, the sequel is shaping up as another large-scale ensemble production.

Anirudh returns with the music

Anirudh Ravichander is composing the music for Jailer 2, continuing his association with the franchise after the soundtrack and background score of the first film became hugely popular.

The makers recently unveiled the film’s soundtrack alongside a special rave event, further building momentum ahead of the theatrical release.

With Rajinikanth returning as Muthuvel Pandian, Nelson back in the director’s chair, Anirudh handling the music and an IMAX release now confirmed, Jailer 2 is being positioned as a major big-screen spectacle.

All eyes will now be on October 15, when Muthuvel Pandian returns to theatres this time on an even bigger screen.
