Air India Makes Delhi-Toronto Flight Non-Stop Again: New Boeing 787-9 to Cut Nearly 3 Hours From Journey…

A long-haul journey between India and Canada is about to become significantly easier for passengers.

Air India has announced that it will deploy its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on the Delhi-Toronto route from August 1, allowing the airline to operate the flight non-stop by eliminating the existing fuel stop in Vienna, subject to available airspace.

The change is expected to reduce the total journey time from Delhi to Toronto by nearly three hours. The current service takes around 20 hours, including the en-route fuel stop, while the new non-stop operation is expected to take approximately 17 hours.

The return journey from Toronto to Delhi will continue to operate non-stop, with the flight taking up to around 16 hours.

The move is likely to be welcomed by travellers, particularly members of the large Indian diaspora in Canada, who frequently travel between the two countries.

Air India to operate daily flights

The airline is also increasing the frequency of flights on the Delhi-Toronto route.

From August 1, Air India plans to operate the service daily, up from the current schedule of five flights per week.

The airline had temporarily reduced the frequency of flights between Delhi and Toronto during June and July 2026, citing unprecedented fuel price increases and wider geopolitical developments that affected flight operations.

The return to a daily schedule, combined with the introduction of the newer Boeing 787-9, marks an important upgrade for one of Air India’s key international routes.

Air India CEO promises an enhanced travel experience

Air India CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson said the introduction of the new aircraft would provide passengers travelling between India and Canada with a significantly improved experience.

Canada is home to one of the world’s largest Indian diaspora communities, making Toronto an important international destination for the airline.

Wilson described the deployment of the new aircraft as another step in Air India’s broader transformation programme, with the airline gradually expanding the use of its latest aircraft and cabin products across important international routes.

The new Boeing 787-9 will also bring Air India’s latest premium offerings to the North American market, giving passengers more choices during the long journey between Delhi and Toronto.

Premium Economy coming to Delhi-Toronto route

One of the biggest changes for passengers will be the introduction of a Premium Economy cabin on the route.

For the first time, travellers flying between Delhi and Toronto will be able to choose from three cabin classes:

• Business Class
• Premium Economy
• Economy Class

The aircraft will feature a total of 296 seats, including 30 Business Class suites, 28 Premium Economy seats and 238 Economy Class seats.

The three-class configuration gives passengers an additional option between the luxury of Business Class and the more affordable Economy Class.

Business Class gets private suites

Passengers travelling in Business Class will have access to 30 private suites, designed to offer a more premium experience on the long-haul route.

Each suite will provide direct aisle access, meaning passengers will not need to disturb fellow travellers when getting up during the flight.

The seats can convert into 79-inch fully flat beds, allowing passengers to rest more comfortably during the overnight or long-duration journey.

The Business Class suites will also include wireless charging, personal storage and a large 17-inch 4K QLED HDR touchscreen for in-flight entertainment.

For travellers spending nearly 17 hours in the air, the combination of privacy, a fully flat bed and enhanced entertainment could make a significant difference.

Premium Economy offers more space

The new Premium Economy cabin is likely to attract passengers looking for additional comfort without paying Business Class fares.

The cabin will feature a 2-3-2 seating configuration, along with a 38-inch seat pitch.

Passengers will also get adjustable headrests, leg and calf rests and individual 13.3-inch 4K QLED HDR touchscreen displays.

The addition of Premium Economy could prove particularly useful for long-distance travellers who want more legroom and comfort than standard Economy Class but do not necessarily need a private Business Class suite.

Economy Class gets upgraded entertainment

Economy Class passengers will also receive an upgraded onboard experience.

The cabin will feature ergonomically designed seats, individual 11.6-inch 4K QLED HDR touchscreens and dedicated holders for personal electronic devices.

Across all three cabins, passengers will have access to an extensive in-flight entertainment library offering more than 3,000 hours of content.

The aircraft will also support Bluetooth audio connectivity, allowing compatible wireless headphones to be used with the entertainment system.

Passengers will additionally find USB-A and USB-C charging ports, along with AC power outlets across the cabins.

Indian-inspired touches onboard

Air India is also bringing a number of design and service touches aimed at creating a more distinctive travel experience.

The Boeing 787-9 aircraft will feature mood lighting inspired by ancient Indian wellness traditions, adding a subtle Indian identity to the cabin environment.

The airline is also refreshing its onboard menus with a combination of Indian and international flavours.

Passengers will also receive premium tableware, plush bedding and redesigned amenity kits, further enhancing the overall experience, particularly for those travelling in the premium cabins.

Flights between Delhi and Toronto on the new Boeing 787-9 are available for booking through multiple channels.

Passengers can make reservations through the Air India website and mobile app, the airline’s customer contact centre and travel agents worldwide.

The new aircraft deployment and non-stop operation are subject to available airspace.

For passengers travelling between India and Canada, however, the biggest attraction is likely to be the elimination of the Vienna fuel stop.

With the journey expected to become almost three hours shorter, daily flights returning from August 1 and the introduction of Premium Economy, Air India’s Delhi-Toronto service is set for a significant upgrade.
