India pacer Gurnoor Brar received an ICC warning and one demerit point after a Level 1 Code of Conduct breach during the first ODI against England.

India fast bowler Gurnoor Brar has received an official warning from the International Cricket Council (ICC) following an incident during the first ODI against England at Edgbaston.

The 26-year-old pacer was found guilty of breaching Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to throwing a ball at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an international match.

Along with the warning, Brar has also been handed one demerit point, marking the first offence on his disciplinary record within the last 24 months.

What Happened During the Match?

The incident occurred during the eighth over of England’s innings. According to the ICC, Brar picked up the ball while fielding and threw it towards the batter in a manner that was deemed inappropriate and dangerous.

The charges were brought by on-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Mike Burns, along with third umpire Sam Nogajski and fourth umpire Russell Warren.

The ICC confirmed that Brar accepted responsibility for his actions and admitted the offence. As a result, he accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Richie Richardson, eliminating the need for a formal disciplinary hearing.

Impressive Debut Despite the Sanction

Despite the disciplinary action, the match proved to be a memorable one for Gurnoor Brar from a cricketing perspective.

The young pacer claimed 2 wickets for 61 runs, dismissing both England openers, Jacob Bethell and Ben Duckett. He also contributed in the field by taking a catch to dismiss Jos Buttler, who managed only five runs.

Brar, who made his international debut against Afghanistan last month, continued to show promise with another impactful performance in English conditions.

What Does a Level 1 Offence Mean?

The ICC clarified that Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct carry penalties ranging from:

  • An official reprimand or warning.
  • A fine of up to 50% of the player’s match fee.
  • One or two demerit points, depending on the severity of the offence.

Since Brar admitted the breach immediately, the matter was resolved without further proceedings.

India Take Early Series Lead

The disciplinary incident did little to affect India’s overall performance as the visitors secured a six-wicket victory over England in the opening ODI.

The win gave India a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, with the second ODI scheduled to be played in Cardiff.

While Gurnoor Brar will hope to avoid further disciplinary issues, his impressive bowling performance suggests he remains an exciting prospect for India’s pace attack in the 50-over format.
