End of an Era at CSK? Stephen Fleming Bids Farewell After 18 Years, Big Blow for MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings Ahead of IPL 2027
After nearly two decades of shaping Chennai Super Kings into one of the IPL’s most successful franchises, legendary head coach Stephen Fleming has officially parted ways with CSK following the disappointing IPL 2026 campaign.
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are entering a new chapter after one of the most significant decisions in the franchise’s history. Following a disappointing IPL 2026 season, where the five-time champions finished eighth and missed the playoffs for a third consecutive year, long-serving head coach Stephen Fleming has officially stepped down after an extraordinary 18-year association with the franchise.
The announcement marks the end of one of the most successful coach-franchise partnerships in Indian Premier League (IPL) history. Fleming first joined CSK as a player in the inaugural 2008 season before taking over as head coach in 2009. Since then, he has played a defining role in building the team’s identity alongside former captain MS Dhoni.
Together, the iconic Dhoni-Fleming partnership guided CSK to five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 trophies. Under Fleming’s leadership, Chennai qualified for the IPL playoffs 12 times and reached an incredible 10 finals, setting benchmarks for consistency in franchise cricket.
The decision reportedly came after discussions between Fleming and the CSK management, with both sides agreeing that it was the right time to move in different directions. Despite recent struggles, the franchise acknowledged Fleming’s enormous contribution to its legacy.
CSK owner Rupa Gurunath paid tribute to the former New Zealand captain, describing him as the “heartbeat” of the coaching unit. She praised his leadership, commitment, and influence in shaping the culture that made Chennai one of the most respected franchises in world cricket.
Fleming, reflecting on his long journey with CSK, expressed gratitude for the memories created over nearly two decades. He said coaching Chennai had been the greatest privilege of his career and thanked everyone associated with the franchise for their unwavering support throughout the years.
The former left-handed batter also coached the Joburg Super Kings in the SA20 League and the Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket (MLC). While those teams regularly reached the playoffs, they were unable to replicate the title-winning success achieved in Chennai.
The coaching change comes at a challenging time for CSK. The franchise won its most recent IPL title in 2023, but performances have steadily declined since then. Chennai finished ninth in 2025 before slipping to eighth in 2026, raising questions about the team’s future direction.

Adding to the team’s difficulties, legendary wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni did not feature in a single match during IPL 2026 after suffering an injury before CSK’s opening fixture against Rajasthan Royals. Although Dhoni was retained as an uncapped player for ₹4 crore, his absence left a major leadership void throughout the campaign.

CSK Managing Director K.S. Viswanathan also acknowledged Fleming’s immense contribution, saying the former coach built a culture based on consistency, humility, discipline, and teamwork. According to him, Fleming’s influence extended well beyond cricketing tactics and helped define the franchise’s identity for nearly two decades.
As Chennai Super Kings prepare for IPL 2027, the search for a new head coach will be closely watched by fans and cricket experts alike. Replacing a figure who shaped the franchise for almost 20 years will be one of the biggest challenges in CSK’s history.
Whether this signals the beginning of a new era or a period of rebuilding, one thing remains certain—Stephen Fleming’s legacy at Chennai Super Kings will remain unmatched for generations of cricket fans.
