Mohit Sharma reacts to India’s team selection changes for second ODI against Afghanistan

India’s team selection for the second ODI against Afghanistan national cricket team has sparked debate, with former pacer Mohit Sharma openly questioning one particular call that, in his words, left him disappointed.

The decision to drop young spinner Harsh Dubey — despite a promising debut — has raised eyebrows among cricket experts and fans alike.

A Promising Debut Cut Short

Dubey made his international debut in the rain-curtailed first ODI at Dharamsala and delivered a noteworthy performance. The left-arm spinner picked up three wickets in five overs, showcasing control and wicket-taking ability.

Yes, he conceded 47 runs, but much of that damage came at the hands of Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who played a sensational knock.

“For a debutant to perform like that under pressure… it deserved more backing,” many observers felt.

Mohit Sharma’s Strong Reaction

Mohit Sharma did not mince his words while analysing the decision.

“The decision that has disappointed me is that one — to drop Harsh Dubey,” he said, expressing clear disagreement with the team management.

He acknowledged the presence of senior spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who replaced Dubey in the playing XI, but argued that the youngster should have been given a longer run.

“You have already seen Kuldeep… he is a big-match player. But Dubey should have been given another go,” Mohit added.

Confidence vs Experience Debate

At the heart of this discussion lies a familiar dilemma — backing youth or relying on experience.

According to Mohit, allowing Dubey to play the entire series would have significantly boosted his confidence. Instead, the early exclusion could leave the youngster second-guessing himself.

“He must be thinking… even after reassurance, one small mistake cost him his place,” Mohit remarked, highlighting the mental impact such decisions can have on emerging players.

More Changes Shake Up the XI

India didn’t stop at just one change.

Pacer Prasidh Krishna was also benched, while all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy missed out due to a thigh injury.

In came Prince Yadav, who made his international debut, along with young star Yashasvi Jaiswal, adding fresh energy to the lineup.

“It’s a bold approach… but one that comes with risks,” cricket analysts believe.

A Bigger Question for Team India

While India continue to experiment in their transition phase, such decisions raise important questions about consistency in selection policy.

“Are young players being given enough time to settle… or are performances being judged too quickly?”

As India push towards building a squad for future global tournaments, striking the right balance between nurturing talent and delivering results will remain crucial.
