‘Virat Also Has to Stay on Top of His Game…’: Ashwin’s Warning After Rohit Sharma ODI Exit Reports Sparks Fresh Debate

Virat Kohli Warned by Ravichandran Ashwin After Rohit Sharma ODI Exit Reports Surface
Ravichandran Ashwin believes Virat Kohli must continue performing at the highest level as reports about Rohit Sharma's ODI future fuel debate over India's transition plans.

The future of India’s senior batting stars has once again become a major talking point after former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin cautioned that even Virat Kohli could face uncertainty if he fails to maintain his exceptional form.

Ashwin’s remarks came amid reports claiming that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, has informed Rohit Sharma that the team management is planning for the future after the upcoming three-match ODI series against England.

According to the reports, the selectors are keen to give young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal an extended run as India begins preparations for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.

Ashwin: Kohli Must Continue Delivering

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin acknowledged Kohli’s outstanding form but admitted that recent developments suggest no player’s position can be considered completely secure.

“The way this is going, Virat also has to be on top of his game, unfortunately. He’s batting beautifully. I’ve never seen Virat bat like this. I’d love to have him in the squad in South Africa, but he has to stay on top of it. I hope that’s not the case, but Rohit hasn’t been too bad either,” Ashwin said.

Kohli has enjoyed an impressive run in One-Day Internationals this year, scoring 310 runs in five matches at an average of 62 with a strike rate exceeding 103. His consistency has made him one of India’s most dependable batters, yet Ashwin believes the changing approach of the selectors means sustained performances will remain essential.

Rohit Sharma Reports Surprise Cricket Fans

The reported decision regarding Rohit Sharma has surprised many cricket followers, especially considering the veteran opener’s recent performances.

Despite questions surrounding his future, Rohit has reportedly been in strong form during India’s ODI campaign this year while also making noticeable improvements in his fitness.

The reports have also reminded fans of developments from May 2025, when speculation emerged that Rohit was no longer part of India’s long-term Test plans. The veteran subsequently announced his retirement from Test cricket. Soon after, Virat Kohli also stepped away from the longest format, marking the end of an era in Indian cricket.

‘Senior Players Deserve Respect and Honest Communication’

While Ashwin accepted that selectors have every right to make difficult decisions in the interest of the team’s future, he stressed that experienced cricketers deserve transparent communication and respect.

Drawing a comparison with leadership transitions in large corporations, Ashwin said players who have dedicated nearly two decades to representing India should not be left uncertain about their future.

He argued that when a senior player is no longer part of the team’s plans, the management should communicate directly, explain the reasons, and ensure the process is handled with dignity.

Focus Turns to India’s ODI Transition

With the 2027 ODI World Cup firmly on the horizon, India appears to be balancing experience with youth.

Young talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal are expected to receive greater opportunities, while established stars such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma continue to face increasing scrutiny despite their remarkable records.

For now, neither the BCCI nor the selection committee has made any official announcement regarding Rohit Sharma’s ODI future. However, Ashwin’s comments have intensified discussions over how Indian cricket should manage the transition from one golden generation to the next.

As India prepares for crucial overseas assignments and the next World Cup cycle, the performances of its senior players will remain under the spotlight.
