“I Grew up in a stable hindu household”: Usha Vance opens up on why she didn’t convert like JD vance
Amid renewed debate over their interfaith marriage, Usha Vance has explained why she never felt the need to leave her Hindu roots, while JD Vance reflected on how faith gave him stability.
Washington DC: Months after sparking controversy over comments about his wife’s faith, US Vice President JD Vance and his wife Usha Vance have once again found themselves at the center of public conversation this time over religion, marriage, and personal belief.
In a recently viral interview with CBS journalist Robert Costa, Usha Vance spoke candidly about why she has never felt compelled to convert to Christianity, despite her husband’s Catholic faith.
Her answer was simple but powerful.
“I grew up in a Hindu household that was a very stable household. I have not felt the same need to seek something different that he has,” Usha said, reflecting on her upbringing and faith journey.
The comment comes months after JD Vance faced backlash at a Turning Point USA event in October 2025, where he openly said he hoped his wife would one day be “moved” enough to embrace Christianity.
At the time, the remarks triggered strong reactions online, especially among members of the Indian-American and Hindu communities, with many questioning whether it was appropriate for him to publicly speak about his wife’s possible religious conversion.
Now, the couple has attempted to provide more context.
During the interview, JD Vance revealed that Usha once told him something deeply personal about his own faith journey.
“Therapy didn’t work for you; church does,” he recalled her saying.
Usha clarified that while therapy can help many people, JD personally struggled to trust the process.

She explained that religion gave him a space to confront emotions and build a stronger sense of identity.
JD, in turn, opened up about his own difficult upbringing.
He described growing up in a “nontraditional” household, marked by instability and frequent changes in caregivers.
“There was movement and chaos in my youth,” he said, adding that organised religion offered him the stability he had long searched for.
The couple, who met at Yale Law School and married in 2014, have often spoken publicly about raising their three children in a multi-faith household.
While Usha remains rooted in her Hindu faith, JD converted to Catholicism in 2019 after spending much of his life as an atheist.
Addressing public misconceptions, Usha also clarified that while JD’s faith naturally encourages sharing religious beliefs, he does not pressure her to convert.
“It’s not like he’s proselytising to me every day,” she said.
Their conversation has once again reignited discussions about interfaith marriages, religious identity, and personal choice issues that resonate far beyond American politics.
