A brief exchange between Suryakumar Yadav and Kuldeep Yadav became one of the most discussed off-field moments of India’s emphatic victory over Pakistan in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Television cameras showed Suryakumar staring angrily at Kuldeep after the spinner dropped a catch near the boundary. Hardik Pandya, whose bowling suffered from the missed opportunity, also appeared visibly frustrated.
The clip quickly went viral, with fans wondering whether the pressure of an India-Pakistan match had created tension inside the dressing room.
Months later, Suryakumar has finally revealed the full story—and it began with Kuldeep’s frustration over not getting the bowling opportunity he had expected.
Why Kuldeep Yadav was already frustrated
Speaking on former India opener Aakash Chopra’s YouTube channel, Suryakumar explained that the match situation left him with limited time to use all his bowling options.
Kuldeep was eager to bowl, but the former Indian captain decided to complete Axar Patel’s spell before turning to Tilak Varma, Varun Chakravarthy and Hardik.

According to Suryakumar, Kuldeep was disappointed and repeatedly wondered why he was not being brought into the attack.
That frustration seemingly followed the spinner into the field.
The decisive moment arrived during the closing stages of Pakistan’s chase at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Shaheen Shah Afridi attempted a big shot off Hardik’s bowling, sending the ball towards Kuldeep at long-on.
Kuldeep moved towards the ball but failed to complete the catch. Despite getting his hands to it, he could not prevent the ball from crossing the boundary for six.
For Suryakumar, the mistake itself was not the biggest problem. What angered him was what he considered a casual approach to the chance.
“He dropped the catch, and I got angry at that time,” Suryakumar recalled.
The former captain explained that he would have accepted the dropped chance had Kuldeep made a committed effort. In his view, however, the spinner had not attacked the catch with the intensity expected from him.
Cameras capture an uncomfortable exchange
Immediately after the missed opportunity, Pandya was seen making animated gestures towards the fielders. Suryakumar also confronted Kuldeep near the boundary, creating an exchange that looked far more serious on television.
The tension appeared to continue after the match. Cameras captured Suryakumar and Kuldeep exchanging angry looks, while Kuldeep appeared visibly upset.
Social-media users began examining every expression and gesture, leading to speculation about a possible disagreement between the two Indian players.
Suryakumar admitted that both men were angry in the immediate aftermath. He recalled that Kuldeep’s face had turned red, while he also continued staring at the spinner in frustration.
However, the former captain insisted that the exchange did not represent a serious rift.
“It was banter,” he clarified while discussing the incident with Chopra.
According to NDTV Sports, Suryakumar later came up with the idea of recreating the angry exchange in a humorous social-media reel after the team reached Ahmedabad.
The video allowed the two players to laugh at the incident and show supporters that there was no lasting bitterness between them.
India dominated Pakistan despite the late error
The dropped catch ultimately had no impact on the result.
India had earlier posted 175 for seven, with Ishan Kishan producing a superb innings of 77 runs from 40 deliveries. His aggressive knock included 10 fours and three sixes, giving India the momentum needed to set a challenging target.
Pakistan’s chase never developed into a serious threat. India’s bowlers maintained pressure throughout the innings and dismissed their rivals for 114, completing a commanding 61-run victory.
The win secured India’s qualification for the Super Eight stage and extended their dominant record against Pakistan in T20 World Cup matches.
India eventually went on to lift the trophy after defeating New Zealand in the final, becoming the first team to successfully defend the men’s T20 World Cup title.
A captain’s anger, not a dressing-room fallout
Suryakumar’s explanation offers a more human view of a moment that appeared dramatic on television.
High-pressure matches often produce emotional reactions, particularly when India face Pakistan on the world stage. A lapse in concentration can frustrate teammates, and captains are expected to demand complete commitment in every department.
In this instance, Suryakumar’s anger was not simply about a dropped catch. It came from his belief that Kuldeep could have made a stronger effort, especially after being disappointed about his limited role with the ball.
