Suniel Shetty Reveals the Dark Side of Becoming an Action Hero: ‘Stunts That Could Have Killed Me’

The actor has recalled the extraordinary physical risks he took during his career, revealing that some of the stunts he performed were dangerous enough to have cost him his life.
In a throwback interaction with the media, Suniel spoke about the hard work that went into establishing himself as an action star and said success was a combination of persistence, learning and a certain amount of luck.
‘75% hard work, 25% luck’
Looking back at his journey, Suniel said he believed his career was largely built on hard work.
The actor explained that he constantly tried to improve himself, learn from criticism and understand where he needed to make changes.
He credited his willingness to listen to critics and work on his weaknesses as an important part of his growth.
For an actor who eventually became closely associated with action films, that process was particularly demanding.
‘Stunts that could have killed me’
Suniel’s most striking revelation was about the physical cost of creating his action-hero image.
He recalled performing dangerous stunts that left him badly hurt and said he had suffered injuries across his body while trying to make his action sequences convincing.
The actor explained that his goal was to make audiences believe in the character he was portraying — an action hero who appeared almost untouchable on screen.
But creating that illusion required a very real physical sacrifice behind the camera.
For Suniel, the audience needed to feel that the action was authentic.
That meant pushing himself through pain and performing stunts that, by his own account, could have had far more serious consequences.
From Balwan to Bollywood action icon
Suniel made his Bollywood debut with Balwan in 1992.
The film introduced audiences to an actor who had a strong physical presence and was comfortable in action-oriented roles.
He subsequently became part of some of the most popular Hindi films of the 1990s and 2000s.
His filmography includes Mohra, Border, Dhadkan, Hera Pheri, Main Hoon Na, Phir Hera Pheri and Awara Paagal Deewana.

The project is currently under production and brings him back to one of the characters that helped establish his popularity beyond action cinema.
Suniel is also set to share screen space with Tiger Shroff in an upcoming untitled action thriller directed by Sachin Ravi.
Given his history with the genre, the project could provide another opportunity for the veteran actor to return to the action space that played such an important role in his career.
