Salman Khan’s ‘Maatrubhumi’ hits fresh roadblock: CBFC halts release despite title change
The war drama based on the Galwan Valley clash faces another delay as the Censor Board reportedly withholds certification, raising uncertainty over its August release.
Salman Khan’s much-anticipated war drama Maatrubhumi has reportedly run into fresh trouble, with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) withholding its clearance certificate until further notice.
The development has cast doubt over the film’s expected August release, with industry insiders now suggesting another delay may be inevitable.
Originally titled Battle of Galwan, the film is inspired by the 2020 Galwan Valley clash — one of the most significant military confrontations between India and China in recent years.
The film was initially slated for release on April 17, timed around Eid, but was postponed. After the title change to Maatrubhumi, the makers were reportedly eyeing an Independence Day window in August. However, the latest certification setback has now complicated those plans.
Directed by Apoorva Lakhia and produced by Salma Khan under the banner of Salman Khan Films, the film also stars Chitrangda Singh in a prominent role.
The film had already sparked controversy even before its release, especially in China.
Following the teaser launch, several users on Chinese social platform Weibo criticised the film, accusing it of presenting a one-sided narrative of the Galwan Valley incident.
The teaser, unveiled on December 27, 2025, coincided with Salman Khan’s 60th birthday, generating massive buzz among fans. But the political sensitivity of the subject quickly turned it into a talking point beyond cinema circles.

Earlier this year, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) distanced itself from the project after reports claimed the ministry had raised concerns over the film.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified that matters related to filmmaking are handled by the relevant authorities and that the ministry has no involvement in such decisions.

In the film, Salman essays the role of Santosh Babu, the commanding officer of the 16 Bihar Regiment, who led Indian troops during the tense border confrontation while enforcing a disengagement agreement.
The supporting cast includes Abhilash Chaudhary and Ankur Bhatia, while music for the film has been composed by Himesh Reshammiya.
Salman was last seen in Sikandar, directed by A. R. Murugadoss and co-starring Rashmika Mandanna.
For now, fans are left waiting as Maatrubhumi remains in limbo — and the big question is whether the film will make it to theatres this Independence Day or face yet another push.
