‘No Question of Retirement’: BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla Breaks Silence on Rohit Sharma Exit Rumours

Rumours surrounding Rohit Sharma’s international future have been put to rest—at least for now.

BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla has categorically dismissed reports suggesting that the Indian captain is considering retirement from international cricket. Speaking during the UP T20 League mini auction in Agra, Shukla urged fans not to pay attention to speculation circulating on television and social media.

His remarks come after weeks of debate over Rohit’s future, particularly following India’s mixed performances in recent white-ball series.

‘There Is No Question of Retirement’

Addressing the ongoing speculation, Shukla made it clear that Rohit continues to be a vital member of the Indian squad.“Rohit Sharma is a member of our team and is playing. Whatever is going round in the media and social media has no meaning. There is totally no question of his retirement till now,” Shukla told reporters.

The statement is expected to end the growing rumours that had linked Rohit’s future with discussions around India’s leadership and team restructuring.

Rohit Answered Critics With the Bat

While speculation intensified in recent weeks, Rohit responded in the best possible way—with a memorable innings.

After modest scores of 11 and 26 in the first two ODIs against England, the experienced opener bounced back with a superb 138 off 110 balls in the third match.

His innings featured 17 fours and five sixes, helping India post a commanding total. The knock also saw Rohit become the first Indian batter to score an ODI century at Lord’s, adding another milestone to his illustrious career.

So far this season, Rohit has accumulated 379 runs in ODIs at an average of 42.11 and a strike rate of 99.21, including one century and one half-century.

Apart from addressing Rohit’s future, Rajeev Shukla also expressed confidence in Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir, who has faced criticism following India’s recent white-ball performances.

India endured disappointing series defeats against England and Ireland, leading to questions over the coaching setup. However, Shukla insisted there was no need for immediate changes.“Everyone has their opinion, but the selectors will decide who stays in the team and who doesn’t. India team has been playing well and winning matches; there is no need for any changes now,” he said.

Focus on Developing Future Talent

During his interaction, Shukla also praised the UP T20 League, highlighting its role in identifying promising young cricketers.

According to him, several players from the tournament have gone on to secure IPL contracts, while talent identification initiatives such as the UPCA Speed Hunt are helping discover the next generation of fast bowlers.

With a clear statement from one of the BCCI’s top officials, speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma’s retirement has largely been put to rest.
