After Backlash, A Big Change ‘Peddi’ Gets New Cut with Janhvi Kapoor Scenes Ahead of June 17 Re-Release
Director Buchi Babu Sana revises the film following criticism over ‘hypersexualisation’, promises deeper emotional arc for Janhvi Kapoor’s character.
Buchi Babu Sana has announced a revised version of his sports drama Peddi, set to hit theatres again on June 17.
The decision comes after weeks of intense criticism over the portrayal of Janhvi Kapoor’s character, Achiyyamma, with many viewers calling certain scenes “objectifying” and “unnecessary.”
What’s Changing in the New Version?
Speaking at a success meet, the director confirmed that three previously deleted scenes have now been added back into the film.
“We have already edited it… all the missing elements will be included,” he stated.
The updated version will feature:
- Two additional scenes focused on Janhvi Kapoor’s character
- One extended scene featuring Jagapathi Babu
According to the director, these changes aim to add emotional depth and strengthen the audience’s connection with the female lead.
Backlash That Triggered the Change
When Peddi released on June 4, it opened to a massive ₹51 crore on day one, but soon faced backlash over certain sequences.

Critics highlighted:
- Camera angles focusing on body over character introduction
- Scenes perceived as “suggestive” rather than emotional
- A controversial harassment sequence labelled “disturbing” by viewers
Some even questioned whether the film was “romanticising problematic behaviour.”
Director Issues Apology
Amid growing criticism, Buchi Babu Sana issued a public apology, stating:
“Cinema should entertain and inspire… it should never make anyone feel uncomfortable or disrespected.”

He clarified that there was no intention to disrespect any actor or character, and confirmed that the controversial portions were edited out in the revised cut.
Box Office Still Strong
Despite the controversy, Peddi — starring Ram Charan alongside Janhvi Kapoor — has continued its impressive run.
The film has reportedly crossed ₹307 crore worldwide, making it one of the biggest Indian hits of 2026 so far.
A Shift Towards Audience-Driven Cinema?
The decision to revise and re-release the film highlights a growing trend in Indian cinema — filmmakers actively responding to audience feedback in real-time.
With the new version set for release, all eyes are now on whether these changes will reshape audience perception and give Peddi a stronger emotional resonance.
