‘You Can’t Measure Mileage Yourself’: Nitin Gadkari’s Remark Amid E20 Petrol Debate Sparks Fresh Discussion…
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari says drivers should not rely solely on dashboard readings to judge fuel efficiency, as the debate over E20 petrol and vehicle mileage continues across India.
Nitin Gadkari’s Comments on Fuel Efficiency Draw Attention Amid E20 Petrol Debate
As discussions around E20 fuel continue across India, Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, has made a statement that has reignited the conversation on how motorists should evaluate their vehicle’s fuel efficiency.
Speaking during a television interview, Gadkari suggested that ordinary vehicle owners cannot accurately determine their car’s mileage simply by looking at the dashboard or making personal estimates. According to him, the most reliable assessment should come from manufacturer-authorised diagnostic equipment available at dealerships.
The Remark That Sparked the Debate
During the interview, a journalist claimed that the fuel efficiency of a recently purchased car had dropped significantly after the widespread adoption of E20 petrol, reportedly falling from around 11 km/l to 7 km/l.
Responding to the claim, Gadkari questioned how the mileage had been measured. When told that the figure was based on the vehicle’s dashboard display, the minister maintained that such readings should not be considered definitive and argued that authorised dealer equipment provides a more accurate evaluation of a vehicle’s fuel performance.

Government Has Already Acknowledged Some Mileage Impact
The discussion comes shortly after the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas acknowledged that E20 petrol can reduce fuel economy in certain vehicles.
According to a government clarification issued recently, vehicles using E20 petrol may experience a 3% to 5% reduction in fuel efficiency in some cases. However, the ministry also emphasised that mileage should not be viewed as the only measure of the fuel’s overall benefits.
The government has promoted ethanol blending as part of its broader strategy to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, lower emissions, and strengthen India’s energy security.
Can Drivers Measure Fuel Efficiency at Home?
Automotive experts generally agree that while dashboard fuel economy displays provide a useful estimate, they are not perfectly accurate.
Most modern vehicles calculate mileage using data collected from the Engine Control Unit (ECU), including fuel injection, distance travelled and driving conditions. These figures usually remain reasonably close to real-world performance but can vary by 2% to 5%.

For motorists seeking a more practical estimate, experts often recommend the full-tank method. This involves filling the fuel tank completely, resetting the trip meter, driving normally until the next refill, and then dividing the total distance travelled by the number of litres required to refill the tank.
What Does a Dealer’s Diagnostic Machine Actually Do?
Authorised dealership diagnostic tools offer much more than a simple mileage calculation.
These systems communicate directly with the vehicle’s ECU to analyse the health of components such as fuel injectors, oxygen sensors, and airflow sensors. They can also detect engine faults, verify software calibration, and identify issues that may contribute to increased fuel consumption.
However, experts point out that these machines do not directly measure real-world mileage under every driving condition. Factors such as city traffic, highway cruising, air-conditioner usage, tyre pressure, driving habits and passenger load continue to influence fuel economy regardless of what the diagnostic system reports.
A Debate That Continues
As India continues expanding the use of ethanol-blended fuels, discussions surrounding fuel efficiency and vehicle compatibility are expected to remain in focus.
While the government argues that E20 petrol supports long-term environmental and energy goals, many motorists continue to closely monitor its impact on day-to-day running costs. Gadkari’s remarks have added another dimension to the debate by highlighting the importance of how fuel efficiency is measured, rather than relying solely on dashboard estimates.
