Kia Sorento Set to Enter India’s Premium SUV Battle on September 4

New Delhi: The premium SUV segment in India is about to witness fresh competition as Kia India has officially confirmed the arrival of the much-awaited Kia Sorento.

The three-row SUV will make its India debut on September 4, marking Kia’s entry into a higher segment and positioning the Sorento as the brand’s new flagship internal combustion engine (ICE) SUV in the country.

The upcoming model will sit above the popular Kia Seltos in Kia’s India lineup and is expected to challenge established premium SUVs with its combination of size, technology and powertrain options.

Kia Sorento Targets India’s Growing Premium SUV Market

Kia recently released the first official teaser of the Sorento, confirming that the company is expanding its SUV portfolio with a more premium offering.

The segment has been growing rapidly as Indian customers increasingly move towards premium three-row SUVs for long-distance travel and family usage.

India Could Get Locally Assembled Sorento

One of the biggest factors that could influence the Sorento’s success in India is local assembly.

Reports suggest that Kia may assemble the SUV in India, which could help the company achieve more competitive pricing compared to a fully imported model.

Local production could also strengthen Kia’s position against established premium SUV manufacturers by allowing better cost management and potentially wider availability.

Hybrid and Diesel Engines Expected

While Kia has not officially confirmed the Indian-spec engine lineup, the Sorento is expected to arrive with multiple powertrain options.

Globally, the SUV is available with a strong-hybrid petrol setup featuring:

  • 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine
  • Electric motor
  • Around 230 hp combined output
  • Approximately 380 Nm torque
  • Six-speed automatic transmission

The diesel version available internationally uses a:

  • 2.2-litre diesel engine
  • Around 202 hp power output
  • Approximately 440 Nm torque

International markets also offer front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations, although Kia is yet to reveal which variants will be introduced in India.

Multiple Seating Options for Indian Families

The Sorento is expected to appeal strongly to family buyers due to its flexible cabin layout.

Depending on the variant, Kia could offer multiple seating configurations, including:

  • Five-seat layout
  • Six-seat captain seat configuration
  • Seven-seat arrangement

This flexibility could make the Sorento suitable for both premium family buyers and customers looking for a comfortable long-distance touring SUV.

Kia’s Biggest SUV Move Yet?

The launch of the Sorento represents an important step in Kia India’s growth strategy. Since entering the Indian market, Kia has built a strong reputation with models like the Seltos, Sonet and Carens, but the Sorento will take the brand into a more premium space.

With a larger footprint, hybrid technology, premium positioning and three-row practicality, the Sorento could become one of the most important SUV launches of the year.

All eyes are now on September 4, when Kia officially reveals the India-spec Sorento, including pricing, features and detailed specifications.
