New Delhi: Former India captain and legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar has sparked a major debate in the cricket world after calling for strict punishment against overseas players who withdraw from the Indian Premier League (IPL) mid-season, allegedly citing injuries that later appear questionable.

Gavaskar’s remarks come amid growing frustration among franchises over sudden player exits that leave teams scrambling for replacements during crucial phases of the tournament.

“Ban them for a season”: Gavaskar’s strong stance

Known for his blunt and fearless opinions, Gavaskar suggested that the BCCI should consider serious deterrents, including bans and financial penalties, to discourage mid-season withdrawals.

“If a player pulls out after a few matches, there should be consequences—maybe even a ban from future IPL seasons,” Gavaskar reportedly said.

He further proposed that salaries and even foreign board contributions should be adjusted based on the actual number of matches a player participates in.
