A US federal judge criticized Donald Trump's lawsuit against the IRS and referred one of his lawyers to the Florida Bar for possible disciplinary review.

A United States federal judge has delivered a strongly worded ruling in a lawsuit involving President Donald Trump and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), describing the case as an improper attempt to give legal legitimacy to an agreement between the President and agencies under his own administration.

In a detailed 56-page order, Judge Kathleen M. Williams questioned the nature of the legal proceedings, arguing that the lawsuit lacked genuine legal opposition because the parties involved were effectively under the same executive authority.

Judge questions the lawsuit’s legitimacy

According to the ruling, Judge Williams said the lawsuit appeared to be an effort to secure broad legal protections rather than resolve a genuine legal dispute.

She observed that no attorney representing the United States Government formally participated in the case during its proceedings and noted that the agencies named in the lawsuit ultimately fall under the President’s executive authority.

The judge also referenced a remark previously attributed to Donald Trump, in which he reportedly said, “I’m suing myself,” using the statement to illustrate her concerns about the absence of an adversarial legal process.

Settlement agreements face judicial criticism

The case stemmed from the disclosure of Donald Trump’s tax returns during his first presidential term.

Court documents discussed proposed settlement agreements that reportedly included protections against future IRS investigations into previously filed tax returns related to Trump, his family, and associated businesses.

Another proposal referenced the creation of a compensation fund intended for individuals who claimed they had been affected by alleged government actions.

Judge Williams questioned the rationale behind these arrangements, suggesting that parts of the proposed settlement appeared more symbolic than based on a conventional legal assessment.

Attorney referred for disciplinary review

As part of the ruling, Judge Williams referred one of Donald Trump’s attorneys to the Florida Bar for potential disciplinary proceedings.

The referral does not itself determine misconduct but requests that the professional body review the attorney’s conduct in relation to the case.

Political and legal debate continues

The ruling comes amid continued legal and political scrutiny surrounding Donald Trump and has already drawn significant attention in the United States.

According to reports, following criticism from some Republican lawmakers, the US Department of Justice indicated it would not move forward with one aspect of the proposed compensation fund, while maintaining other elements related to tax protections.

The latest decision is expected to add another chapter to the ongoing legal battles surrounding the US President, with further developments likely as appeals and related proceedings continue.
