“Why is Gill being ignored…?” BCCI Under Fire as Azharuddin Questions Shubman Gill’s T20I Snub Despite Strong Form
Former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin raises serious questions over the exclusion of Shubman Gill from T20Is, while also pointing to the snub of Sarfaraz Khan and Auqib Nabi from the Test setup.
A fresh debate has erupted in Indian cricket as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) faces criticism over its selection choices, particularly the continued exclusion of Shubman Gill from the T20I format, despite his consistent performances across formats.
Former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin has openly questioned the decision-making process, expressing surprise at Gill’s absence from the T20 setup. According to Azharuddin, Gill has not only delivered strong individual performances but has also shown maturity in leadership roles.
Gill, who has been serving as India’s captain in Tests and ODIs, was previously the vice-captain in T20Is but was dropped from the squad ahead of the T20 World Cup earlier this year. His omission has continued to spark discussion among experts and former cricketers.
Speaking in an interview, Azharuddin said, “Gill is handling the captaincy job very well. His individual performance has also improved a lot. He is one of the finest players; I don’t know why they don’t select him for T20s.”

Beyond Gill’s case, Azharuddin also raised concerns about the non-selection of promising domestic performers such as Sarfaraz Khan and Auqib Nabi in the Test squad, questioning whether enough opportunities are being given to in-form players from the domestic circuit.
The remarks have reignited discussions around India’s selection policy, with fans and analysts divided over the balance between experience, form, and team structure. While some argue that rotation and strategy are key in modern cricket, others believe consistent performers like Gill deserve a fixed place across all formats.
As India continues to build towards major international assignments, the spotlight is now firmly on the selectors and whether they will reconsider their approach in upcoming series.
For now, the debate around Shubman Gill’s T20I exclusion is only growing louder, with voices like Azharuddin adding further weight to the conversation.
