Why was Revanth Reddy’s US visit blocked? Telangana BJP asks CM to reveal ‘whom he wanted to meet’

The political confrontation over Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s proposed visit to the United States intensified on Tuesday, August 25, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) questioning the purpose of the trip and asking the chief minister to disclose whom he intended to meet in America.

Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao hit back after Revanth Reddy accused the NDA government at the Centre of blocking his foreign visit and described the decision as “dictatorial”.

Rao argued that before levelling allegations against the Centre, the chief minister should explain the proposed itinerary and purpose of his meetings in the United States.

BJP asks: Whom did Revanth Reddy plan to meet in US?

At the centre of the controversy is a straightforward question being raised by the state BJP: Who was Revanth Reddy planning to meet, and why?

Rao said the chief minister owed an explanation to the public regarding the individuals he intended to meet during the trip and the purpose behind those engagements.

The BJP leader maintained that without providing adequate information about the visit, Revanth Reddy should not make what he called “false allegations” against the Union government.

The remarks have added another layer to the ongoing political dispute between the Congress government in Telangana and the BJP-led government at the Centre.

‘Previous foreign visits were not stopped’

Rao also pointed towards Revanth Reddy’s previous overseas trips to challenge the allegation that the Centre was deliberately targeting the Telangana government.

According to the BJP leader, the chief minister had previously received permission for foreign visits, including trips involving the US, London and Singapore.

Rao argued that Revanth Reddy should therefore examine why permission was not granted on this particular occasion rather than immediately accusing the Centre of political discrimination.

He further claimed that chief ministers had also been denied permission for overseas visits during the previous UPA government when sufficient details about their proposed travel had not been provided.

BJP says foreign travel clearance follows MEA rules

The Telangana BJP maintained that decisions concerning official foreign visits are taken according to established procedures involving the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Rao’s argument was that the denial should be viewed through the lens of administrative rules rather than as evidence of political hostility towards Telangana.

The row erupted after Revanth Reddy publicly attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Centre over the decision.

Speaking in Hyderabad on August 25, the chief minister described the refusal as “dictatorial” and said it amounted to an insult to Telangana’s four crore people.

Revanth Reddy accuses Centre of discrimination

Revanth Reddy broadened his criticism beyond the cancelled US trip, accusing the Centre of adopting a different approach towards Telangana and Gujarat.

The chief minister alleged that Telangana was being denied opportunities and support while Gujarat received preferential treatment from the Union government.

The BJP strongly rejected that charge.

Rao said the NDA government does not discriminate between states and argued that several major infrastructure and development projects undertaken in Telangana demonstrate the Centre’s commitment to the state.

BJP lists highways, Vande Bharat and AIIMS projects

To counter Revanth Reddy’s allegation, Rao pointed to the expansion of National Highways, redevelopment and modernisation of railway stations, and the introduction of Vande Bharat Express trains serving Telangana.

He also highlighted projects including AIIMS Bibinagar and railway infrastructure in Warangal as examples of Central investment in the state.

The BJP’s position is that such projects contradict the Congress government’s allegation that the Centre is deliberately neglecting Telangana.

The dispute, however, has now moved beyond infrastructure funding and into a politically sensitive question over the ability of a sitting chief minister to undertake an official foreign visit.

Congress-BJP confrontation intensifies in Telangana

The blocked US visit has provided another flashpoint in an already strained relationship between the Revanth Reddy government and the BJP-led Centre.

For the chief minister, the issue has become one of Telangana’s dignity and the Centre’s treatment of an elected state government.

For the BJP, the question is different: Was all the necessary information about the proposed trip provided, and what exactly was Revanth Reddy planning to do in the United States?

With both sides trading accusations, the political focus is now likely to remain on the precise reason permission was withheld — and whether more details about the chief minister’s proposed meetings and itinerary emerge.

Until then, the BJP’s question to Revanth Reddy is likely to remain at the heart of the controversy: “Whom did you want to meet in America, and for what purpose?”
