Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar detained after Kerala House altercation in Delhi; says, ‘Governor was coming, and Governor is King’

Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar was detained by the Delhi Police on Friday following an alleged altercation at Kerala House in the national capital. The incident reportedly occurred after a disagreement over room accommodation and later escalated into a confrontation with officials.

According to reports, Kumar, who is the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), was taken into custody after the Resident Commissioner of Kerala lodged a complaint with the police.

How did the incident unfold?

As per reports, Kanhaiya Kumar had arrived at Kerala House intending to stay in a room that was reportedly booked in the name of a friend.

However, officials informed him that no rooms were available.

Seeking clarification, Kumar reportedly met Kerala Resident Commissioner Puneet Kumar. The discussion allegedly turned into a heated argument, following which the Resident Commissioner contacted the Delhi Police and requested that Kumar be removed from the premises.

Police subsequently detained the Congress leader.

‘Governor was coming, and Governor is King’

While being escorted by police, Kanhaiya Kumar spoke briefly to reporters, claiming that he had been informed Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar was expected to visit Kerala House later in the day.

Reacting to the situation, Kumar remarked:”Governor was coming, and Governor is King.”

He also alleged that he had only gone to meet a friend and criticised the action taken against him.”This is the behaviour of Amit Shah and the Delhi Police.”

Congress says legal assistance being arranged

Following the detention, Kanhaiya Kumar’s office issued a statement saying he had been taken to Jaffarpur Kalan Police Station.

The statement added that party members were gathering more information about the incident and had arranged legal assistance.”We are yet to get more details. We are sending legal help to him.”

Kerala House has witnessed protests before

Located on Jantar Mantar Road in New Delhi, Kerala House has previously been associated with several political and social movements.

During the protest by India’s wrestlers against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the Kerala Government had allowed protesting wrestlers to use the premises to freshen up, a move that had attracted political attention at the time.

Kanhaiya Kumar’s recent political campaigns

A former president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU), Kanhaiya Kumar has remained actively involved in campaigns focused on student issues, unemployment, and examination reforms.

Earlier this month, he criticised the Narendra Modi government over the state of India’s education system, describing it as being in the “ICU.” He demanded the resignation of then Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, sought an investigation into alleged links between paper leak networks and officials, and called for comprehensive reforms to restore trust in public examinations.

Kumar also said Rahul Gandhi had been engaging with students, teachers, and parents across the country to understand their concerns and gather suggestions for improving the education system.

The circumstances surrounding Friday’s altercation are likely to remain under scrutiny as more details emerge from both the police and the Congress party.
