Gautam Gambhir Wanted Virat Kohli Back as Test Captain? New Report Makes Big Claim After India’s Leadership Change
A report has claimed that head coach Gautam Gambhir backed Virat Kohli to return as India’s Test captain following the Border-Gavaskar Trophy defeat, before both Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from the format.
A fresh report has sparked discussion in Indian cricket after claiming that Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir wanted Virat Kohli to take over the Test captaincy following India’s disappointing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 campaign.
According to the report, Gambhir believed Kohli’s experience and leadership could help guide the team through a crucial transition period after the series defeat against Australia.
However, the leadership plans reportedly changed dramatically after both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their retirement from Test cricket ahead of India’s tour of England.
Report Claims Gambhir Preferred Kohli
The report suggests Gambhir was in favour of handing the Test captaincy back to Kohli, who previously enjoyed one of the most successful captaincy tenures in Indian Test history.
Kohli led India in 68 Tests between 2014 and 2022, registering numerous overseas victories and guiding the team to the top of the ICC Test rankings.
However, no official confirmation has been issued by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Gambhir or Kohli regarding the reported discussions.
Double Retirement Changed India’s Plans
Any possibility of Kohli returning as captain came to an end after both senior stars stepped away from the longest format.
Rohit Sharma, who had succeeded Kohli as Test captain, also retired before the England series, leaving India searching for a long-term leader.
The simultaneous retirements marked the end of an era for Indian Test cricket and accelerated the team’s transition towards a younger core.

Shubman Gill Begins New Chapter
Following the retirements, the selectors appointed Shubman Gill as India’s new Test captain.
Gill led India during the England series, where the visitors managed to secure a drawn series against a strong English side.
The young captain’s calm leadership and consistent batting performances have been viewed as encouraging signs for India’s future in the format.
Focus Shifts to White-Ball Cricket

Although Kohli and Rohit have retired from Test cricket, both remain available for One-Day Internationals (ODIs).
The experienced duo are expected to return for India’s upcoming ODI assignments, where their experience will continue to play a crucial role as India prepares for future ICC tournaments.
Meanwhile, Gambhir and the team management remain focused on building a new-look Test side around emerging players under Gill’s leadership.
While reports about Gambhir’s preference have generated significant interest, there has been no official confirmation that Kohli was formally offered the captaincy before his retirement from Test cricket.
