Even before hitting theatres, Shraddha Kapoor’s upcoming film Eetha has found itself in the middle of a heated controversy. While the teaser received widespread appreciation for Shraddha’s intense transformation into legendary Lavani performer Vithabai Narayangaonkar, the film’s title has sparked a debate that is growing louder by the day.

The issue came to the forefront after leaders from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), along with members of Vithabai’s family, questioned why a biopic based on such an iconic personality does not carry her name.

Why Is Eetha Facing Criticism?

According to reports, the NCP’s Film and Cultural Department has raised concerns over the title Eetha, arguing that it fails to properly represent the legacy of Vithabai Narayangaonkar. Party leaders believe that the film should have been named directly after the artist—such as Vitha or Vithabai—to ensure that her contribution to traditional art forms is duly acknowledged.

Babasaheb Patil, Maharashtra State President of the NCP’s Film and Cultural Department, emphasized that honoring cultural icons is a collective responsibility. He questioned the makers’ choice, pointing out that “a film based on such a legendary figure should carry her name and reflect her immense contribution.”

Family Voices Support the Demand

Adding weight to the controversy, Vithabai Narayangaonkar’s family has also supported the demand for a title change. They believe that placing her name at the forefront is essential for preserving her legacy and introducing her story to newer generations with authenticity and respect.
