“History Made in 26 Balls…” Rovman Powell Breaks West Indies Record, Surpasses Nicholas Pooran in T20I Run Charts
The former West Indies captain becomes the highest run-scorer in T20Is for his country during the 2nd T20I against Sri Lanka, overtaking stars like Nicholas Pooran and Chris Gayle.
West Indies cricket has a new name etched at the very top of its T20I history charts.
In a landmark moment during the second T20I against Sri Lanka, former captain Rovman Powell became the highest run-scorer for the West Indies cricket team in T20 International cricket, overtaking some of the biggest names the format has ever seen.
It was not just the milestone that stood out — it was the manner in which Powell reached it, playing a quickfire knock that underlined his growing stature as a senior batter in the shortest format.
Powell’s Quickfire 43 Seals Record-Breaking Moment
Batting at No. 3, Powell struck a fluent 43 off just 26 deliveries, smashing two sixes and five boundaries in a typically aggressive innings.
With that knock, he moved past former teammate Nicholas Pooran, who had accumulated 2275 T20I runs before retiring from international cricket in June 2025.
Powell now stands at 2314 runs in 105 innings, officially making him the highest run-scorer for West Indies in T20I history.
His record also includes one century and 10 half-centuries, reflecting both consistency and power in the middle order.
From Debut to Dominance
Since making his T20I debut in 2017, Powell has grown into one of the most dependable batters in West Indies cricket.
What makes his rise more significant is the company he now finds himself ahead of in the record books.
Legends like Chris Gayle, who scored 1899 T20I runs before retiring in 2021, and Evin Lewis, with 1799 runs and two T20I centuries, now sit behind Powell in the West Indies charts.
Another key name, Brandon King, follows closely with 2012 runs, but Powell’s consistency has given him the edge at the top.

Elite Company in World Cricket
While Powell now leads West Indies’ T20I batting list, the global leaderboard remains dominated by some of the biggest modern-day stars.
Pakistan’s Babar Azam sits at the top of the overall T20I run charts with 4596 runs in 136 innings, continuing to set benchmarks in the format.
He is followed by India’s modern greats — Rohit Sharma with 4231 runs and Virat Kohli with 4188 runs. Both Indian legends retired from T20I cricket after winning the 2024 World Cup, closing out iconic international careers in the shortest format.
Series Hanging in Balance
Powell’s milestone came during a tightly contested series between West Indies and Sri Lanka.
The three-match T20I series is currently locked at 1-1, setting up a high-stakes decider.
West Indies started strong with a seven-wicket win while chasing 148 in 19.2 overs. However, Sri Lanka responded strongly in the second match, defending a challenging total of 195 to level the series.
The final T20I will be played at Sabina Park, Jamaica, on June 14, promising a fitting conclusion to a competitive series.
Earlier, Sri Lanka had also edged the ODI series 1-0, with rain playing spoilsport in the remaining matches.
A New Leader Emerges for West Indies
Powell’s record-breaking achievement is more than just a statistic — it reflects a new era for West Indies T20 cricket.
With senior legends retired and younger players stepping up, Powell’s consistency at the top has provided much-needed stability.
As West Indies continue rebuilding in the shortest format, their new record-holder now carries both responsibility and expectation — and if recent form is anything to go by, Rovman Powell is only just getting started.
