Who is Subhadeep Ghosh? Former KKR title-winning coach tipped to replace T Dilip as Team India’s fielding coach

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to usher in another change to Team India’s support staff, with Subhadeep Ghosh emerging as the frontrunner to replace T Dilip as the national team’s fielding coach.

The development comes after BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the contracts of assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate and fielding coach T Dilip will not be extended. While the board is yet to make an official announcement, reports suggest Ghosh is among the leading candidates being considered for the role ahead of India’s upcoming tour of Sri Lanka.

BCCI plans support staff overhaul

According to reports, the BCCI has decided to move in a new direction with its coaching staff after reviewing recent performances.

Ryan ten Doeschate, who joined the Indian setup at the recommendation of head coach Gautam Gambhir, is understood to have opted against continuing after reportedly not being assigned the role initially discussed during his appointment.

Meanwhile, T Dilip’s tenure is also coming to an end, with the board choosing not to offer another extension despite his continued presence with the team over the past few years.

Who is Subhadeep Ghosh?

Born in 1968 in Digboi, Assam, Subhadeep Ghosh is a former domestic cricketer who represented Assam and Railways during his playing career.

A right-handed middle-order batter and off-spinner, Ghosh featured in 17 First-Class matches and 17 List A games between 1994 and 2005. He scored 316 runs in First-Class cricket and 307 runs in List A competitions before transitioning into coaching after retirement.

Although his playing career remained modest, Ghosh gradually built a strong reputation as one of India’s most respected fielding coaches.

Years of experience in India’s cricket system

Over the last six to seven years, Ghosh has worked extensively within the Indian cricket structure, particularly through the National Cricket Academy (NCA) during Rahul Dravid’s tenure.

His coaching journey includes several important assignments across age-group and national teams.

He served as the fielding coach of the Indian women’s team during their tour of Australia in 2021 and has also worked with India A and the India Under-19 squad, including the team’s campaign at the 2024 ICC Under-19 World Cup in South Africa.

His familiarity with India’s emerging talent is viewed as one of his biggest strengths if he is appointed to the senior national side.

Successful IPL experience

Ghosh also brings valuable experience from the Indian Premier League (IPL).

He was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) support staff during the franchise’s successful 2014 IPL campaign, when they lifted their second championship title.

Following his stint with KKR, he joined the Delhi Capitals as their fielding coach, further strengthening his credentials in elite-level coaching.

What happens next?

The BCCI is expected to announce its new fielding coach before India’s tour of Sri Lanka begins.

While Secretary Devajit Saikia has confirmed that “two or three names” are under consideration, Subhadeep Ghosh is widely regarded as the leading candidate to take over the role.

If appointed, the experienced coach will join Gautam Gambhir’s support staff at a crucial time, as Team India continues its transition with a renewed focus on improving fielding standards across all formats.
