Vishnu Vishal Reveals Why He Apologised to Netflix After Lal Salaam Failed
Vishnu Vishal says he personally apologised to Netflix after Lal Salaam failed, insisting every actor should take ownership of their films.

Chennai: Vishnu Vishal has candidly reflected on the disappointing performance of Lal Salaam, revealing that the film’s failure affected him deeply. The actor admitted he found it difficult to move on after the film underperformed in theatres and on streaming platforms, even going as far as apologising to Netflix for its outcome.

Speaking during an interview with Rednool, Vishnu said he believed it was his responsibility to own the film’s performance, regardless of the circumstances.

‘I Should Take Ownership’

Recalling his conversation with Netflix, Vishnu shared that he apologised to the streaming platform after Lal Salaam failed to meet expectations.

According to the actor, Netflix executives reassured him that the film was primarily associated with Superstar Rajinikanth, who appeared in an extended role, and that he shouldn’t blame himself for the outcome.

However, Vishnu insisted that he viewed the project as his own responsibility. He explained that every actor should stand by their work, adding that taking ownership of both success and failure is essential in the film industry.

The actor also revealed that Netflix appreciated his attitude, saying OTT platforms value artists who take responsibility for their projects.

A Film That Failed to Deliver

Directed by Aishwarya Rajinikanth, Lal Salaam was released in cinemas in 2024. Produced by Lyca Productions under Subaskaran Allirajah, the sports drama featured music by AR Rahman and starred Vishnu Vishal, Vikranth, and Rajinikanth in a special extended role.

Despite the star-studded lineup, the film received mixed reviews from critics and audiences. Made on an estimated budget of ₹80–90 crore, the film reportedly earned around ₹17.74 crore in India and approximately ₹31.25 crore worldwide, making it a commercial disappointment.

Industry reports also suggested that the film’s underwhelming box office performance added to the financial challenges faced by Lyca Productions.

A Delayed OTT Release

The film’s digital journey proved equally unusual.

Although reports claimed that Netflix had acquired the streaming rights before the theatrical release, the film’s OTT premiere was repeatedly delayed.

Later, director Aishwarya Rajinikanth disclosed that a hard disk containing important footage had gone missing, disrupting plans to release an extended director’s cut.

Instead of debuting on Netflix as initially expected, Lal Salaam eventually premiered on Sun NXT in June 2025.

Eyes on ‘Gatta Kusthi 2’

After putting the setback behind him, Vishnu Vishal is now preparing for the release of Gatta Kusthi 2.

Directed by Chella Ayyavu, the sequel reunites Vishnu Vishal and Aishwarya Lekshmi as Veera and Keerthi. The film also sees the return of Karunas, Kali Venkat, Munishkanth, and Gajaraj, while Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, and Karunakaran join the ensemble cast.

Featuring cinematography by K M Bhaskaran and music composed by Sean Roldan, Gatta Kusthi 2 is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on July 3.
