The iconic Tata Sierra has returned in an all-electric avatar, and it is far more than just a nostalgic nameplate. With futuristic technology, a premium cabin, strong real-world performance, and genuine off-road capability, the Tata Sierra EV aims to redefine what buyers can expect from an electric SUV.

After spending a full day behind the wheel of the 75kWh QWD (Quad Wheel Drive) variant, one thing became clear—it may look rugged and upright on the outside, but underneath that boxy silhouette lies one of Tata Motors‘ most ambitious electric vehicles yet.

Classic Design Meets Modern EV Styling

The Sierra EV retains the unmistakable proportions that made the original Sierra famous decades ago. Its tall stance, squared-off profile, and muscular appearance give it a unique identity in a market filled with sleek crossovers.

Unlike the internal combustion (ICE) version, the electric model features a closed-off body-coloured front fascia, subtle Tata.ev badging, and a QWD emblem on the rear pillar.

One of the standout design elements is the clamshell-style tailgate, which gives the rear of the SUV a distinctive look. While the powered tailgate is a welcome addition, it could respond a little quicker. The glossy black plastic on the lower bumper also raises concerns about long-term durability and scratches.

The test vehicle, finished in Nainital Nocturne, initially appeared understated but revealed a striking purple-bronze metallic effect under sunlight, making it one of the Sierra EV’s most attractive paint options.

Step inside the Sierra EV, and the cabin immediately feels futuristic.

The dashboard is dominated by a triple-screen layout, creating a premium and high-tech atmosphere. Exclusive to the EV version is an Augmented Reality Head-Up Display (AR HUD), which projects navigation guidance and highlights surrounding vehicles and pedestrians directly in the driver’s line of sight.

Performance That Defies Expectations

Despite its upright proportions, the Sierra EV is surprisingly quick.

Selecting Boost Mode transforms the SUV into an energetic performer. Instant electric torque launches the vehicle forward effortlessly, and thanks to the remarkably quiet cabin, acceleration often feels less dramatic than the speedometer suggests.

For everyday use, City and Sport modes offer smoother throttle calibration, making the SUV easier to manage in traffic and on highways.

The braking system, however, could benefit from stronger initial bite, as the pedal feels softer than expected during spirited driving.

Off-Road Capability Isn’t Just Marketing

Unlike many electric SUVs designed exclusively for urban roads, the Sierra EV demonstrates genuine off-road credentials.

During testing, the QWD version successfully tackled:

• Incline restart tests

• Uneven off-road terrain

The Quad Wheel Drive system inspires confidence beyond paved roads, making the Sierra EV a versatile option for adventure-oriented buyers.

Although the SUV includes a dedicated Drift Mode, it was unavailable for evaluation during the drive session.

Ride Comfort Is One of Its Biggest Strengths

Perhaps the Sierra EV’s greatest achievement lies in ride quality.

Thanks to frequency-selective damping, the suspension absorbs potholes and broken roads with remarkable composure. The setup prioritises comfort over outright sportiness, resulting in a plush ride that should appeal to families and long-distance travellers alike.

Some body roll is noticeable around corners, but that is a reasonable compromise for the excellent comfort levels.

Practicality is another plus. The electric platform frees up additional storage in the front compartment, offering convenient space for the charging cable and small travel essentials.

Real-World Efficiency Looks Promising

The test began with a displayed range of just over 500 kilometres on a full battery.

After a full day of mixed driving that included highways, city roads, and off-road sections, the battery still showed 65% charge remaining, with approximately 235 kilometres of estimated range left.

While actual range naturally varies depending on driving style and conditions, the early signs point towards a practical and efficient electric SUV for everyday use.

Verdict

The Tata Sierra EV successfully balances heritage with innovation.

It offers bold styling, an exceptionally modern cabin, strong acceleration, genuine off-road capability, and an impressively comfortable ride—all while delivering promising real-world efficiency.

There are a few minor shortcomings, including slightly soft brake feel and some ergonomic details that could be refined. However, these are relatively small compromises in an otherwise thoroughly convincing package.

Rather than relying solely on nostalgia, the Tata Sierra EV establishes itself as a serious contender in India’s premium electric SUV segment. For buyers seeking a distinctive EV that combines technology, comfort, practicality, and performance, the Sierra EV deserves to be high on the shortlist.
