India captain Shreyas Iyer celebrates his historic half-century against England in Durham, becoming the first Indian skipper to score a T20I fifty in England.

Shreyas Iyer added another remarkable chapter to his cricketing journey on Thursday, producing a captain’s innings that not only rescued India from early trouble but also earned him a place in the record books.

During the rain-affected opening T20 International against England in Durham, Iyer became the first Indian captain to score a half-century in a men’s T20I in England, achieving a feat that no Indian skipper had managed before.

The stylish right-hander scored a well-crafted 68 off 48 deliveries, combining patience, control, and timely aggression to guide India to a competitive total. In the process, he surpassed the previous record held by former captain Virat Kohli, whose unbeaten 47 against England in Cardiff in 2018 had stood as the highest T20I score by an Indian captain in England.

The innings came at a crucial moment for the visitors, who entered the series looking to recover from a disappointing 0-2 defeat against Ireland. India’s start could hardly have been worse as both Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan were dismissed inside the first two overs, leaving the team reeling at 6 for 2.

With pressure mounting, Iyer stepped up and anchored the innings with maturity. While opener Abhishek Sharma launched a fierce counterattack with a rapid 59 off 27 balls, the Indian captain played the perfect supporting role before gradually taking control of the innings.

The duo stitched together a valuable 82-run partnership for the third wicket, stabilizing the innings and shifting momentum back in India’s favour. Iyer reached his milestone fifty in 38 balls, displaying excellent game awareness and shot selection throughout his stay at the crease.

As the innings progressed, the captain accelerated confidently, finding boundaries regularly and delighting spectators with a towering six over extra cover. His knock finally ended on 68 when he was trapped leg-before-wicket by Saqib Mahmood, but not before laying a strong foundation for India.

Late fireworks from Shivam Dube, who remained unbeaten on 42, pushed India’s total to an impressive 189/7, giving the visitors a strong chance of drawing first blood in the series.

However, nature had different plans.

Persistent rain during the innings break prevented England from beginning their chase, forcing officials to abandon the match. While the washout denied fans a result, it could not overshadow Iyer’s landmark achievement.

The innings served as a timely reminder of the captain’s quality and composure under pressure. More importantly, it provided India with a major confidence boost heading into the second T20I in Manchester.

Although the scorecard will show the match ended without a result, Shreyas Iyer’s historic knock ensured the day belonged to him, as the Indian captain etched his name into cricket history with a record-breaking performance on English soil.
