South India’s Mega Rail Makeover: ₹715 Crore Secunderabad Station Upgrade Nears Completion The New Features May Surprise Passengers

For millions of railway passengers travelling through Telangana every year, a major change is taking shape at one of South India’s most important transit hubs. The iconic Secunderabad Railway Station, which has served travelers since 1874, is undergoing a massive redevelopment worth ₹715 crore that promises to redefine the passenger experience.

The ambitious makeover is part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, a nationwide initiative launched by the Ministry of Railways in 2022 to modernise railway stations across India. In Telangana alone, 40 stations have been selected for redevelopment under the scheme, with a combined investment of more than ₹2,015 crore.

A Historic Station Gets a Modern Identity

Located in the heart of Secunderabad, the station is among the busiest railway hubs in South India. It currently handles nearly 1.97 lakh passengers every day and facilitates the movement of over 200 trains.

As passenger traffic continues to rise, railway authorities are preparing the station for future demand. Once completed, the upgraded facility will be capable of serving approximately 2.7 lakh passengers daily and handling nearly 32,500 passengers every hour.

Officials say that around 64 percent of the redevelopment work has already been completed, bringing the long-awaited transformation closer to reality.

What Will Change at the New Secunderabad Station?

The redevelopment project is designed to create a modern, passenger-friendly railway terminal while improving operational efficiency.

Among the most significant additions are new terminal buildings on both the northern and southern sides of the station. Each structure will feature a ground floor and three upper levels, creating additional space for passenger services and circulation.

A major highlight of the project is a double-storey sky concourse that will function as a central passenger movement zone. The expansive waiting hall inside the concourse will be able to accommodate up to 3,000 travelers at a time.

Passengers can also expect a range of upgraded amenities, including:

• Recreational spaces
• Enhanced waiting areas
• Advanced security infrastructure

To improve accessibility, the station will feature 26 lifts, 32 escalators and two travelators, ensuring smoother movement across platforms and station zones.

Better Connectivity, Less Congestion

One of the biggest challenges at busy railway stations is congestion. The revamped station aims to address this through dedicated entry and exit blocks that will streamline passenger movement.

The project also focuses heavily on multimodal connectivity. New walkways will directly connect the station with nearby Metro services, including the East and West Metro stations, making transfers quicker and more convenient.

Additionally, integration with local bus networks and the development of a multi-level parking facility are expected to significantly improve first-mile and last-mile connectivity.

Telangana’s Railway Modernisation Push

The transformation of Secunderabad Station reflects a broader effort by the South Central Railway and the Government of India to create world-class transportation infrastructure.

Earlier this year, redevelopment work under the scheme was completed at Begumpet Railway Station, Karimnagar, Warangal and Jogulamba Gadwal, marking significant progress in Telangana’s railway upgrade mission.

With construction advancing steadily, the new Secunderabad Railway Station is expected to become a landmark transport hub that blends modern architecture, smart mobility solutions and improved passenger comfort while preserving its historic significance.
