India’s shocking defeat against Ireland in the opening T20I clash in Belfast has not only raised questions over the team’s performance but has also sparked a fresh debate over team selection — particularly around Sanju Samson and teenage batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar did not mince his words while analysing India’s disappointing batting collapse, warning Samson that competition for his spot is getting intense.

Samson, who opened the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma, managed just 5 runs off 4 balls before being dismissed early by Irish pacer Jai Moondra. His short stay at the crease added to India’s troubles as the visitors eventually crumbled under pressure while chasing a challenging target.

Speaking after the match, Manjrekar pointed out that Samson can no longer afford to take his place for granted.

“Sanju Samson needs to be careful because Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is breathing down his and Abhishek Sharma’s neck,” Manjrekar said, sending a strong message about the growing competition in India’s T20 setup.

The absence of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who has been making headlines with his explosive performances in domestic cricket, surprised many fans. While the 15-year-old did not get his debut, Manjrekar believes his presence could have added a different dimension to India’s chase.

However, the former batter also admitted that the conditions in Belfast were far from easy.

“The target was too big, and conditions were difficult. Vaibhav may have made things easier, but it wouldn’t have changed everything,” Manjrekar explained.

India, the reigning ICC Men’s T20 World Cup champions, entered the series as heavy favourites under new captain Shreyas Iyer, but the team looked rusty and underprepared.

Ireland’s disciplined bowling attack, led by Matthew Hollard and Matthew Humphreys, who both picked up three wickets each, completely outplayed the Indian batting lineup.

This defeat marks India’s first-ever loss to Ireland in T20 internationals, ending their dominant streak of eight consecutive wins over the Irish side.

For Samson, the pressure is now very real. With talents like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi waiting in the wings and selectors keeping a close eye, the second T20I could become a crucial opportunity for the wicketkeeper-batter to prove his worth.
