Mohammed Shami’s absence from India’s Test squad for the recently announced Sri Lanka series has intensified speculation over the future of the veteran fast bowler. While there has been no official announcement regarding his international career, a new report suggests the selectors have already shifted their focus toward grooming a new generation of pacers.

The experienced seamer, who has been one of India’s most dependable bowlers across formats for more than a decade, reportedly does not feature in the selection committee’s long-term roadmap as the team prepares for the next phase of international cricket.

Strong domestic return wasn’t enough

Following his injury setback and subsequent omission from the national side, Shami responded in the best possible way—by delivering consistently in domestic cricket.

The Bengal pacer bowled extended spells throughout the Ranji Trophy, finishing the campaign with an impressive 37 wickets. He repeatedly maintained that he was fully fit and available for national selection, raising hopes of an international comeback.

However, despite meeting the expected fitness standards and producing strong performances, Shami was overlooked once again when India’s squad for the Sri Lanka Test series was announced.

Selectors reportedly backing youth

According to a report by Sportstar, India’s selection committee has already shortlisted a group of around 15 young fast bowlers across formats who are expected to form the backbone of the country’s pace attack over the coming years.

The report suggests the selectors are looking beyond immediate results and are instead planning for the next World Test Championship cycle as well as the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Rather than relying on experienced bowlers nearing the latter stages of their careers, the strategy is reportedly aimed at giving younger pacers consistent international exposure now so they are ready to shoulder responsibility in the future.

Bumrah remains the leader

While the transition is underway, Jasprit Bumrah continues to be the undisputed leader of India’s fast-bowling attack.

However, with the premier pacer’s workload expected to be carefully managed due to the demands of international cricket, the selectors are keen to develop a reliable pace unit capable of performing even in his absence.

Building a strong support system around Bumrah has reportedly become one of the selection committee’s biggest priorities.

Could Shami still have played a role?

However, according to the report, the selectors believe delaying the transition would only postpone an inevitable change, prompting them to invest fully in younger options.

More responsibility on Mohammed Siraj

With Shami seemingly moving further away from the Test setup and Bumrah unlikely to feature in every match of lengthy series, Mohammed Siraj is expected to shoulder greater responsibility in India’s pace attack.

Alongside Siraj, several emerging fast bowlers are likely to receive extended opportunities as the team management prepares for future ICC tournaments and the next World Test Championship cycle.

Although Shami’s international career has not officially come to an end, the latest developments indicate that the veteran may find it increasingly difficult to reclaim a regular place in India’s Test squad unless circumstances change significantly.
