KEM Hospital launches inquiry after MBBS student Sejal Pawar’s remarks on a comedy show trigger widespread backlash.

A controversy has erupted in Mumbai’s medical community after an MBBS student from KEM Hospital came under scrutiny for making allegedly insensitive remarks during a comedy show appearance.

The student, Sejal Pawar, faced backlash on social media after a short clip from comedian Pranit More’s show went viral. The clip reportedly showed her making comments that many viewers found disrespectful toward human cadavers used in medical education.

Viral clip sparks outrage

The controversy began when a two-minute segment from a longer one-hour show circulated widely online, triggering criticism from both the public and members of the medical fraternity.

Senior doctors and professionals expressed concern, pointing out that cadavers are donated for educational purposes and are treated with the highest level of dignity and respect in medical institutions.

Inquiry initiated by KEM Hospital

Taking cognisance of the issue, KEM Hospital has ordered an internal inquiry to examine the matter.

According to the hospital administration, a two-member committee has been constituted to review the full context of the remarks.

The Dean of the institution stated:

“We have received information that some insensitive remarks may have been made… We will examine whether the comments have been taken out of context.”

The committee includes senior faculty members such as Dr Anita Chalak (Warden and Head of Biochemistry) and Dr Shraddha More (Assistant Professor, Medicine), who will assess the situation before submitting a report.

The findings are expected to determine whether the remarks violated guidelines set by the National Medical Commission, particularly those related to professional conduct on social media.

Institution signals strict but balanced action

Sources indicate that while the hospital does not intend to act excessively harshly, it is keen to send a strong message regarding professional ethics.

Medical experts have emphasised that public comments made for humour should not compromise the dignity of donated bodies, which are integral to medical training.

Sejal Pawar issues apology

Amid growing criticism, Sejal Pawar released a public apology on social media, acknowledging the impact of her words.

“I completely understand why people were upset… The topic is sensitive, and my comments came across in a way they shouldn’t have.”

She further added:

“While there was never any intention to disrespect anyone, I recognize that impact matters more than intent.”

Her statement has received mixed reactions online, with some appreciating the apology while others continue to call for accountability.

Larger debate on ethics and social media

The incident has sparked a broader discussion about the responsibility of medical students and professionals in public spaces, especially in the age of viral content.

While humour and free expression are valued, experts argue that professional boundaries must remain intact, particularly in fields that demand ethical sensitivity like medicine.
