Kalki 2898 AD Sequel Gets Bigger? Makers Plan ₹20 Crore OTT Spin Offs Before Prabhas’ Return, Reports Claim
Nag Ashwin’s ambitious sci-fi universe may expand beyond the big screen, with character-based OTT films reportedly in the works ahead of the sequel’s release.
Hyderabad: The buzz around Prabhas’ much-awaited Kalki 2898 AD sequel just got even bigger. While fans are eagerly waiting for the next chapter of the futuristic mythological saga, fresh reports suggest that the makers are planning an ambitious expansion of the Kalki Cinematic Universe through exclusive OTT spin-off films.
According to industry reports, the team is considering producing a series of one-hour character-driven spin-off films, each with a reported budget of around ₹20 crore, ahead of the sequel’s theatrical release.
If the plan materialises, it could become one of the boldest storytelling experiments in Indian cinema.
Character-Based Spin-Offs Could Expand the Universe
The reported OTT films are expected to focus on key characters from the Kalki universe, including Dulquer Salmaan’s mysterious role, which generated massive curiosity after the first film.
Sources suggest these standalone stories could dive deeper into the backstories, motivations, and journeys of major characters that the main sequel may not have enough time to fully explore.
Given the complex timeline and layered mythology of the franchise, these spin-offs could offer fans crucial context before the next film arrives.
Big Budget, Bigger Vision
Each of the proposed spin-off films is said to carry a budget of approximately ₹20 crore, highlighting the scale at which director Nag Ashwin and the production team are planning to expand the franchise.
However, reports indicate that the biggest challenges currently lie in securing OTT platform approvals and finalising compensation deals with the stars involved.
If platforms like Netflix or other streaming giants come onboard, it could mark a major milestone for Indian cinematic universes.

Sequel Progress: Two Schedules Done
The sequel to Kalki 2898 AD has already completed two shooting schedules, and the next phase is reportedly set to begin in August or September.
Director Nag Ashwin, who is currently wrapping up other commitments, is expected to soon shift full focus to the sequel’s pre-production and the portions involving Prabhas.
Sources indicate that once Prabhas’ dates are locked, the team plans to shoot continuously to maintain momentum.
Star-Studded Cast Returns

The Kalki franchise features one of the most powerful ensembles in Indian cinema.
The sequel is expected to feature:
- Prabhas
- Amitabh Bachchan
- Kamal Haasan
- Shobana
- Disha Patani
There is, however, uncertainty surrounding Deepika Padukone’s return. Reports have hinted that she may not reprise her role in the sequel, though there has been no official confirmation.
The Universe That Changed Indian Sci-Fi
The first Kalki 2898 AD was praised for its ambitious blend of science fiction, mythology, and Hindu scriptures, creating a dystopian future world centered around Kashi in the year 2898 AD.
The story revolved around protecting the unborn child of SUM-80, believed to be Kalki, the final avatar of Lord Vishnu.
Its grand visuals, powerful performances, and unique world-building helped establish the foundation of what is now being called the Kalki Cinematic Universe.
A New Era for Indian Franchise Storytelling?
If the OTT spin-off reports turn out to be true, Kalki could become one of the first Indian film franchises to deeply integrate streaming content into its theatrical storytelling model.
Such a move would not only build stronger audience engagement but also create massive anticipation before the sequel arrives.
For now, fans will have to wait for official confirmation—but one thing is clear: the world of Kalki is only getting bigger.
