India vs Afghanistan 2nd ODI: Will Kuldeep Yadav and Yashasvi Jaiswal Get a Chance in Lucknow?

As India prepares to take on Afghanistan in the second ODI in Lucknow, the spotlight is not just on the result but on the bigger picture shaping the team’s future. With the hosts already leading the three-match series 1-0, all eyes are now on whether two talented players — Kuldeep Yadav and Yashasvi Jaiswal — will finally get an opportunity in the playing XI.

The ongoing ODI series is being viewed as more than a battle against Afghanistan. For the Indian team management, it is a crucial testing ground as preparations begin for the next ICC Cricket World Cup.

India captain Shubman Gill had already hinted before the series that experimenting with combinations would be a major objective.

With nearly two dozen ODI matches scheduled before the World Cup, the management is keen to identify the best mix of players and roles rather than focusing solely on immediate victories.

Kuldeep’s ODI Credentials Could Earn Him a Recall

One of the biggest talking points ahead of Wednesday’s clash is the future role of Kuldeep Yadav. The left-arm wrist-spinner has endured a difficult few months despite being one of India’s most effective bowlers in the 50-over format.

After playing a key role during ODI assignments against South Africa and New Zealand, Kuldeep’s recent performances have not matched expectations. A modest Indian Premier League season and a below-par outing in the recent Test match raised questions about his current form.

However, ODI cricket remains his strongest format. His ability to break partnerships and strike during the middle overs continues to make him a valuable asset for India.

If the team management decides to bring him back, debutant Harsh Dubey could be the player most likely to make way despite his impressive three-wicket performance in the opening ODI.

Jaiswal Waiting Patiently for an Opportunity

Another player generating considerable interest is Yashasvi Jaiswal.

With star batter Virat Kohli unavailable due to a hamstring injury, India’s No. 3 position remains open for experimentation. In the first ODI, Ishan Kishan was preferred, but Jaiswal’s recent performances across formats have strengthened his case for selection.

The young left-hander has impressed with his fearless batting style and consistency, making him one of India’s brightest prospects. Team management officials have indicated that multiple players could be tested in different batting positions during the series to better understand the squad’s flexibility.

Should Jaiswal get the nod, it would provide another opportunity for India to assess how he fits into their long-term ODI plans.

Rohit, Gill Eye Bigger Contributions

Veteran opener Rohit Sharma will be eager to bounce back after being run out cheaply in the series opener. Meanwhile, captain Shubman Gill will be satisfied with the composure shown by his side during the rain-affected first ODI.

India’s pace attack also impressed, particularly debutant Gurnoor Brar, who is expected to retain his place after a promising start to his international career. Young pacer Prince Yadav remains in contention for a debut.

Afghanistan Looking for a Stronger Team Performance

For Afghanistan, the challenge is clear: provide support to star opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz.

Gurbaz’s attacking century was the standout performance for the visitors in the first ODI, but the lack of partnerships prevented Afghanistan from posting a truly competitive total.

The visitors will also expect more impact from their world-class spin trio of Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and rising talent Allah Mohammad Ghazanfar. The Lucknow pitch is traditionally more spin-friendly than Dharamsala and could offer Afghanistan’s bowlers a greater chance to influence the contest.

More Than Just a Series

While a victory on Wednesday would seal the series for India, the match represents something far more important. Every team selection, batting position and bowling combination is being closely examined as India begins building toward cricket’s biggest tournament.

For Kuldeep Yadav and Yashasvi Jaiswal, the second ODI could be more than just another game—it could be a crucial step in their journey toward securing a place in India’s World Cup plans.
