Former Real Madrid striker Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez says Cristiano Ronaldo's confidence has often been mistaken for arrogance, describing the Portuguese legend as humble and relentlessly competitive.

Madrid: Cristiano Ronaldo has often divided opinion for his outspoken confidence, but former Real Madrid teammate Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez believes the football icon has been unfairly labelled as arrogant.

Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, Chicharito opened up about his experience of sharing the dressing room with Ronaldo during the 2014-15 season at Real Madrid. According to the Mexican striker, everything he had heard about Ronaldo’s unmatched dedication turned out to be true—but not in the way many people imagine.

‘His Competitiveness Never Switched Off’

Chicharito recalled hearing countless stories about Ronaldo during his time at Manchester United, where both he and Rio Ferdinand played before moving on to different clubs.

When he eventually became Ronaldo’s teammate at Real Madrid, he witnessed firsthand the Portuguese star’s relentless pursuit of excellence.

According to Chicharito, Ronaldo’s competitive nature extended beyond football matches and training sessions—even simple moments like dinner became opportunities to challenge himself.

However, he stressed that this mindset was never about proving superiority over others.“His competitiveness wasn’t arrogance. He simply always wanted to improve and be right,” Chicharito explained.

A Winning Mentality Every Second

The former Mexico international believes Ronaldo’s extraordinary longevity is built on an internal drive that never fades.

He described the five-time Ballon d’Or winner as someone whose competitive mindset remains active every hour of the day, allowing him to consistently perform at the highest level for nearly two decades.

According to Chicharito, sustaining such standards requires complete commitment both on and off the pitch.

‘I Saw His Human Side’

One of the biggest misconceptions about Ronaldo, Chicharito said, is that fans rarely get to see the person behind the global superstar.

Because both players regularly arrived early for training and stayed behind for extra gym sessions, they often spent time together away from the spotlight.

Those moments, Chicharito revealed, showed him a humble, respectful and approachable individual.

He described Ronaldo as someone who enjoyed meaningful conversations and never behaved with the arrogance many people associated with him.

Confidence Isn’t the Same as Arrogance

Chicharito also argued that Ronaldo has frequently been criticised simply because he openly acknowledges his own achievements.

He believes modern society often views self-confidence negatively, even when it is backed by years of success.

According to the former striker, there is a clear difference between boasting without merit and confidently recognising accomplishments that have already been earned.

In Ronaldo’s case, Chicharito feels the Portuguese legend has consistently justified his confidence through his performances, records and trophies.

One of Football’s Greatest Icons

Over the course of his illustrious career, Cristiano Ronaldo has established himself as one of the greatest footballers in history.

His success with clubs including Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, and Al-Nassr, along with his achievements for Portugal, has seen him win multiple league titles, UEFA Champions League trophies, Ballon d’Or awards and international honours.

For Chicharito, however, Ronaldo’s greatest strength isn’t just his talent—it’s the unwavering dedication and discipline that have kept him at the pinnacle of world football for so many years.

His remarks offer fans a rare glimpse into the personality behind one of the sport’s most iconic figures, challenging long-held perceptions about confidence, ambition and what it truly takes to become one of the greatest athletes of all time.
