Harare: India’s explosive opener Abhishek Sharma is set to chase another major career milestone when India take on Zimbabwe in the opening T20 International at the Harare Sports Club on Thursday. The stylish left-hander needs just 16 runs to complete 6,000 runs in T20 cricket, a landmark that would further underline his rapid rise in the shortest format.

Fresh from climbing to No. 2 in the ICC Men’s T20I Batter Rankings, Abhishek Sharma has become one of India’s most dependable performers. A strong outing against the Sikandar Raza-led Zimbabwe side could see him add another achievement to an already impressive career.

If Abhishek Sharma reaches the milestone during the opening T20I, he will become only the fourth Indian batter to score 6,000 T20 runs in 200 innings or fewer.

• Shubman Gill – 185 innings

Abhishek enters the match with 5,984 runs from 199 innings, meaning a knock of 16 runs or more will see him join this exclusive club in his 200th innings.

While KL Rahul remains the fastest Indian to the milestone, the overall world record belongs to legendary West Indies batter Chris Gayle, who completed 6,000 T20 runs in just 162 innings.

Although Abhishek will not challenge Gayle’s record, reaching the landmark in 200 innings would still place him among the fastest Indian batters to achieve the feat.

Zimbabwe Has Been One of His Favourite Opponents

The 25-year-old has enjoyed considerable success against Zimbabwe in international cricket. In just six T20Is, Abhishek Sharma has accumulated 179 runs, making him India’s highest run-scorer against the African nation in the format.

His familiarity with the conditions in Harare could once again work in his favour as India begin a crucial three-match series.

Another Record Could Follow on Thursday

The first T20I offers more than one milestone for the left-handed opener.

Currently second on the list of highest run-scorers in India vs Zimbabwe T20Is, Abhishek Sharma has an opportunity to move to the top. To achieve that, he needs to outscore Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza by at least 16 runs during the match.
