Yamaha’s New FZ Blue Flex Is Here… But There’s One Big Change Riders Should Know Before Buying

Yamaha Motor India has officially stepped into India’s growing flex-fuel motorcycle market with the launch of the Yamaha FZ Blue Flex. Priced at ₹1.24 lakh (ex-showroom), the motorcycle is the company’s first-ever flex-fuel offering and has been designed to operate on E20 to E85 ethanol-blended fuel, supporting India’s push towards cleaner and more sustainable mobility.

With this launch, Yamaha becomes the third major two-wheeler manufacturer in the country to introduce a flex-fuel motorcycle, following Suzuki Motorcycle India and Hero MotoCorp.

Built for Ethanol-Blended Fuel

The standout feature of the FZ Blue Flex is its ability to run on fuel containing anywhere between 20% and 85% ethanol. Flex-fuel technology allows the motorcycle to automatically adapt to varying ethanol concentrations without requiring mechanical changes, making it a future-ready option as India gradually increases ethanol blending in fuel.

Initially, the motorcycle will be sold exclusively through Yamaha’s premium Blue Square dealerships located in selected states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu.

Engine Specifications

Powering the FZ Blue Flex is the familiar 149cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled, fuel-injected engine seen in Yamaha’s FZ lineup.

However, running on ethanol-blended fuel has resulted in a slight drop in output.

The engine now produces:

• 11.7 PS of maximum power
• 12.8 Nm of peak torque

Compared to the standard FZ, the flex-fuel version delivers marginally lower performance. This is largely because ethanol contains less energy per litre than conventional petrol, a characteristic common to most flex-fuel vehicles.

While the difference on paper may appear modest, riders focused on outright performance may notice the slightly reduced power delivery.

Design and Features

The FZ Blue Flex shares much of its styling with the FZ Rave, retaining Yamaha’s muscular streetfighter design.

Key design elements include:

• LED headlamp
• Sculpted fuel tank
• Sporty faux air vents
• Single-piece seat
• Metallic Black paint finish

The motorcycle is currently offered in one colour option — Metallic Black.

Cycle Parts and Safety

Mechanically, the motorcycle continues with a 5-speed gearbox, telescopic front forks, and a rear monoshock suspension.

Braking duties are handled by a single-channel ABS system, similar to other motorcycles in the FZ range.

However, one notable change is the reduced ground clearance, which now stands at 135 mm, compared to 165 mm on the standard FZ models. The kerb weight has also increased slightly to 139 kg, making it around 3 kg heavier than the FZ Rave.
