Why a 15-Year-Old Was Made Vice-Captain? Selector Reveals the Real Reason Behind Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s Surprise Duleep Trophy Role
East Zone selector explains why teenage cricket sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was handed leadership responsibilities alongside captain Ishan Kishan, calling it an investment in India’s future.
Indian cricket’s newest sensation, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, has once again become the centre of attention—not for his explosive batting, but for an unexpected leadership role. The 15-year-old prodigy has been appointed vice-captain of the East Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy 2026, with Ishan Kishan leading the side.
The announcement surprised many cricket followers, with several questioning whether assigning such responsibility to a teenager was the right decision at this stage of his career. However, the East Zone selection committee has now clarified that the move was made with a long-term vision in mind.
Former Odisha Ranji Trophy cricketer and East Zone selector Pravanjan Mullick explained that the decision was aimed at helping Vaibhav Sooryavanshi develop leadership qualities while continuing to grow as a cricketer.
According to Mullick, the youngster is not expected to shoulder the entire burden of captaincy. Since Ishan Kishan, the team’s captain, is a wicketkeeper, he will naturally remain deeply involved in the game’s decision-making throughout the day. This means Sooryavanshi’s vice-captaincy is more about learning leadership than carrying the pressure of leading the team outright.
The selector believes that exposing young players to leadership responsibilities at an early stage helps them mature both on and off the field. He added that Sooryavanshi has already shown signs of handling responsibility well during his cricketing journey.
The appointment is not entirely unprecedented. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi already serves as the vice-captain of Bihar’s first-class team and also acted as Ayush Mhatre‘s deputy during the ICC Under-19 World Cup. These experiences convinced the selectors that he possesses the temperament needed for a larger role.

Mullick also highlighted the teenager’s remarkable performances in recent months. Apart from impressing while representing India at the junior level, Sooryavanshi enjoyed an outstanding season in the Indian Premier League with the Rajasthan Royals, where his fearless batting earned widespread praise from cricket experts and fans alike.
The selectors believe that rewarding promising youngsters with leadership opportunities can accelerate their overall development. They see vice-captaincy as another important step in Sooryavanshi’s cricketing journey rather than an unnecessary burden.

Perhaps the most striking part of Mullick’s remarks was his confidence in the youngster’s long-term future. He expressed hope that if Sooryavanshi continues to progress at the current pace, he could eventually lead the Indian cricket team one day.
While such predictions may seem ambitious for a player who is only 15, Indian cricket has witnessed several young talents rise rapidly through the ranks. The selectors feel that nurturing leadership qualities early could prepare him for bigger responsibilities in the years ahead.
As the Duleep Trophy 2026 approaches, all eyes will now be on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Beyond his batting performances, cricket fans will be keen to see how the teenage sensation embraces his new leadership role and whether this bold decision becomes the beginning of an even bigger journey in Indian cricket.
