Shashi Tharoor backs PM Modi’s stance on protecting Indian sailors, triggering political reactions from BJP and Congress.

In a development that has stirred fresh political debate, senior Congress MP Shashi Tharoor publicly backed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stance on the safety of Indian sailors in conflict zones—remarks that the BJP quickly used to target Rahul Gandhi and the broader Opposition narrative.

The comments came in the context of Modi’s recent engagement with former US President Donald Trump and ongoing tensions in West Asia, where the safety of civilian seafarers has emerged as a growing concern.

“Seafarers Should Not Be Treated as Combatants”

Speaking on the issue, Tharoor emphasized the importance of distinguishing civilian maritime workers from combatants during conflicts.

“What Mr. Modi has said is right… seafarers should be exempt from combat attacks,” Tharoor stated, underlining that Indian sailors often work on vessels registered under different countries and should not be targeted in war-like situations.

He further noted that many Indian crew members serve globally in commercial shipping, making their protection a matter of national priority.

Context: Rising Concerns in West Asia

Tharoor’s remarks come amid increasing tensions in West Asia, where several incidents involving commercial vessels have raised alarm over the safety of civilian maritime workers.

While acknowledging the broader geopolitical complexities, he expressed hope that ongoing ceasefire efforts in the region would lead to stability and reduce risks to innocent lives at sea.

“As long as they are civilians doing commercial shipping, they must not be treated like participants in war,” he added.

BJP Seizes the Moment

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party was quick to capitalize on Tharoor’s statement, presenting it as a contradiction within the Congress party.

BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla took a swipe at Rahul Gandhi, calling Tharoor’s remark a “birthday gift” that effectively “busted his fake narrative.”

The sharp response highlights the ongoing political tussle, with both sides attempting to frame the narrative around national interest and accountability.

Congress’s Internal Contrast

Tharoor’s position stands in contrast to criticism from Congress leadership, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge, who had earlier accused the government of not responding adequately to the deaths of Indian nationals in conflict-hit regions.

This divergence in tone has added another layer to the political discourse, raising questions about unity within the Opposition ranks.

Politics Meets Policy

At its core, the debate underscores a larger issue—how India navigates the safety of its citizens working globally, especially in volatile regions.

When national interest intersects with political rivalry, even agreement can become a point of contention.

As tensions continue in West Asia, the safety of Indian sailors remains a critical concern—one that transcends party lines but continues to fuel political exchanges back home.
