A major tragedy was narrowly avoided in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, after a dilapidated four-storey building suddenly collapsed in the city’s congested Mughalpura area. The entire structure reportedly came crashing down within just four seconds, sending a massive cloud of dust across the neighbourhood.
The building, comprising the ground floor and three upper levels, had reportedly become structurally weak. Continuous rainfall since morning is believed to have further affected its condition before it eventually gave way.
As the building collapsed, large chunks of concrete, bricks and other construction material spilled onto the road and reached the shops located across the street. The falling debris also damaged nearby electricity poles and overhead power lines, causing sparks and adding to the danger at the site.
The sudden collapse created panic among residents, shopkeepers and passers-by. However, a potentially deadly incident was prevented because the Moradabad Municipal Corporation had already identified the building as unsafe and ensured that it was vacated.
Officials had also placed barricades around the structure, restricting public movement near the vulnerable building. This timely precaution significantly reduced the risk to residents and people using the surrounding road.

The collapse has once again brought attention to the threat posed by old and structurally unsafe buildings, particularly during prolonged spells of rain. Water can seep into weakened walls and foundations, increasing the risk of sudden structural failure.
The incident also underlines the importance of conducting regular building inspections and acting promptly when a structure is declared dangerous. In this case, the advance evacuation and barricading carried out by the civic authorities appear to have prevented serious injuries or loss of life.
