Retirement U-Turn, Manuel Neuer Returns to Start World Cup Opener ‘Manu Will Play’ Confirms Nagelsmann
Germany bring back their legendary goalkeeper for 2026 opener against Curacao as experience trumps transition.
Manuel Neuer has come out of international retirement and is set to start for Germany, marking one of the most unexpected comebacks of the tournament.
Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann confirmed the decision during a pre-match press conference, putting an end to speculation around the team’s goalkeeping choice.
“All the players are fit and Manu will start,” Nagelsmann stated confidently ahead of Germany’s opening clash against Curacao national football team in Houston.
From Retirement to Redemption
Neuer had called time on his international career in 2024 after Germany’s exit at the hands of Spain national football team in the European Championships quarter-final.
At the time, it seemed like the end of an era.
But football, much like Neuer’s career, thrives on unpredictability.
A stellar season with Bayern Munich, combined with an untimely injury to Marc-André ter Stegen, forced Germany’s hand — and opened the door for a legendary return.
Still Delivering at the Highest Level
Despite nearing 40, Neuer’s performances have remained elite. During the 2025–26 season, he played 37 matches, keeping 11 clean sheets and playing a key role in Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga-winning campaign.
He also helped the club reach the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, underlining his enduring class.
This wasn’t a sentimental recall — it was a selection based on performance.
Injury Setback, But Ready for the Big Stage
Neuer’s return wasn’t without hurdles. A calf injury in May ruled him out of the DFB-Pokal final against VfB Stuttgart and sidelined him for Germany’s recent friendlies.

However, having regained full fitness, he now returns straight into the starting XI — a testament to his stature and reliability.
A Champion Returns to Familiar Territory
This will be Neuer’s fifth FIFA World Cup appearance — a tournament where he has already etched his name in history.
He was instrumental in Germany’s triumph at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, where they defeated Argentina national football team led by Lionel Messi in a tense final.

Now, over a decade later, he returns not just as a player — but as a leader.
Curacao Clash: More Than Just a Formality
While Curacao national football team are considered underdogs and among the debutants, Nagelsmann issued a clear warning:
“This is a David versus Goliath situation.”
The message is simple — no complacency.
Germany will look to begin their campaign with authority, and Neuer’s presence at the back provides both stability and confidence.
Experience Over Experimentation
Germany’s decision to bring back Neuer signals a broader strategy — prioritising experience in high-pressure moments.
In a tournament where margins are razor-thin, leadership and composure often outweigh raw talent.
For Neuer, this is not just a comeback.
It is a chance to add one final glorious chapter to an already legendary career.
