Lionel Messi set to start on the bench as Argentina rotate squad ahead of Jordan clash in FIFA World Cup 2026.

Head coach Lionel Scaloni has confirmed that Lionel Messi will start on the bench against Jordan in the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The announcement comes despite Messi’s sensational form in the tournament, where he has already scored all five of Argentina’s goals across the first two matches. However, with the defending champions having already secured the top spot in Group J, Scaloni appears focused on squad rotation and long-term strategy.

Scaloni’s Honest Admission

Addressing the media ahead of the clash at Dallas Stadium, Scaloni was direct about his decision.

“So Leo is going to start on the bench, and I’m not trying to skirt the question… you deserve a sincere answer,” he said.

He further added that Messi would likely feature later in the game but stopped short of revealing the full starting lineup.

Strategic Rotation or Risky Move?

Scaloni’s decision is largely seen as a strategic one. With qualification already secured, resting Messi could help manage his workload—especially considering the minor hamstring strain he picked up while playing for Inter Miami CF earlier this year.

At 39, managing Messi’s fitness is crucial as Argentina look to defend their title deep into the knockout stages.

“Every Player Deserves a Chance”

The Argentina coach also emphasized the importance of giving opportunities to other squad members.

“Those that are playing tomorrow deserve to play, they are part of the team… all the effort we’ve put in in training is because of them,” Scaloni said.

He added that his ultimate goal is to build a team capable of performing consistently, regardless of who is on the pitch.

“The dream as a coach is to have the team perform the same way, independent of the players,” he explained.

Argentina in Control, Jordan Playing for Pride

Argentina head into the match after convincing wins over Algeria and Austria, while Jordan have already been eliminated following defeats in both their games.

Despite the difference in stakes, Scaloni made it clear that his side will not take the match lightly.

“If you are wearing the jersey and playing, it doesn’t matter if the game has significance or not—you’re going to do your best to win,” he said.

He also hinted at tactical flexibility, noting that Jordan’s defensive setup could require adjustments during the match.

What It Means for Fans

For Messi fans, the news may come as a disappointment, especially given his electric form. However, it also signals Argentina’s confidence and depth as they prepare for the more demanding knockout rounds.

Sometimes, preserving a legend is just as important as playing him—and Argentina seem to be thinking long-term.
