Lionel Messi Saves Argentina Again, But Cape Verde Expose a Worrying Truth in World Cup Thriller
Messi shines with a goal and two assists as Argentina survive Cape Verde’s fearless challenge, but cracks in the defending champions’ armour are beginning to show.
Lionel Messi once again proved why he remains football’s most unstoppable force, but Argentina’s dramatic 3-2 extra-time win over Cape Verde in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 has sparked a bigger debate — are the defending champions becoming too dependent on their iconic captain?
On a night filled with tension, twists, and unforgettable moments, Messi delivered yet another masterclass, scoring the opener and setting up the decisive moments that carried Argentina into the quarter-finals. But while the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner dazzled, the match also revealed vulnerabilities that could trouble coach Lionel Scaloni as the tournament progresses.
For Cape Verde, this was more than just a match. In their debut World Cup campaign, the tiny island nation of just over 500,000 people pushed the reigning world champions to their absolute limit, earning global admiration despite falling short.
Messi’s opener was classic brilliance. The 39-year-old forward read the defensive line perfectly, timed his run with precision, and finished calmly past goalkeeper Vozinha after a lofted assist from Lisandro Martínez. It was a goal built on intelligence, composure, and instinct — qualities that continue to separate Messi from every other player in the world.
The strike marked Messi’s seventh goal of the tournament and extended his incredible scoring streak to eight straight World Cup matches.
But Cape Verde refused to be spectators.
Their response came in the 59th minute when Deroy Duarte fired home the equaliser, catching Argentina off guard. The goal injected fresh belief into the underdogs, who played with fearless intensity and repeatedly tested Argentina’s defence.
Argentina thought they had regained control early in extra time when another dangerous Messi corner found Lisandro Martínez, who smashed home to make it 2-1. Yet Cape Verde stunned the stadium again moments later.
Sidny Lopes Cabral produced one of the goals of the tournament, curling a sensational long-range effort into the top corner to level the game at 2-2. For a brief moment, the impossible felt possible.

With the pressure mounting, it was Messi who stepped up yet again.
His corner delivery in the dying minutes created chaos in the box, leading to a header from Cristian Romero that deflected off Cape Verde defender Diney and into the net for the winning goal.
Even after conceding, Cape Verde kept pushing. Argentina were forced into a deep defensive block for the final minutes, desperately protecting their lead as the debutants launched wave after wave of attack.

The final whistle brought relief for Argentina — but also concern.
While Messi was, once again, the difference-maker, the lack of clinical finishing from forwards Lautaro Martínez and Julián Álvarez remains a serious issue. Both have worked tirelessly throughout the tournament, but neither has consistently delivered in front of goal.
Cape Verde may have shown the rest of the world exactly how to trouble Argentina: stay brave, press aggressively, and force Messi to carry the creative burden.
There’s no doubt Argentina still have the quality to defend their title. But if every knockout game turns into a “Messi rescue mission,” their path to glory could become far more dangerous than expected.
For now, Messi keeps writing history. The question is — can Argentina find another hero before it’s too late?
