‘I Would Like to Stop You Right There’: Kavin Shuts Down Nayanthara ‘Hi’ Age-Gap Romance Theory

The fresh pairing of Nayanthara and Kavin in the Tamil romantic comedy Hi has generated considerable curiosity but one popular theory about the film has now been firmly dismissed.

Ever since the project was announced, a section of moviegoers has speculated that Hi would explore a romance between an older woman and a younger man. The theory gained momentum because Nayanthara and Kavin were born around six years apart, while the film’s trailer deliberately avoided revealing the full nature of their relationship.

Kavin has now made it clear that their characters’ age difference is not the story’s central conflict.

Kavin dismisses the age-gap romance theory

During an interview with Galatta Plus, Kavin was directly asked whether Hi was built around an age-gap relationship.

“I would like to stop you right there,” the actor responded before describing the film as a simple and ordinary love story.

According to Kavin, the romance brings together two families, and the conflicts begin when their lives become connected. The story’s drama, therefore, emerges from disagreements and complications between the families rather than from the ages of its lead characters.

Director Vishnu Edavan, who was also part of the conversation, offered a playful clarification: “There is a gap, but it is not an age gap.” Cinema Express

His comment has added another layer of mystery, suggesting that the “gap” could be emotional, social or connected to the families at the centre of the plot.

Why did viewers assume it was an age-gap romance?

The speculation largely began with the casting of Nayanthara, 41, opposite Kavin, 36. The trailer did little to directly confirm or reject the theory, allowing audiences to form their own interpretations.

The film’s release timing also invited comparisons with Vishwanath and Sons and Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, both of which were discussed for relationships involving noticeable age differences.

However, Kavin insisted that any similarity was purely coincidental. He explained that the Hi team had begun developing the movie approximately two years earlier and had no knowledge that the other films would arrive around the same period.

The actor’s clarification suggests that Hi was neither created to follow a trend nor positioned as another unconventional age-gap romance.

Director wanted to break a casting barrier

Vishnu Edavan previously revealed that his primary intention was to break familiar casting patterns by bringing Nayanthara and Kavin together.

Instead of choosing an established on-screen pair, the filmmaker wanted two actors whose combination would immediately make viewers curious. He believed the unusual casting would provide the “risk factor” needed for an otherwise relatable family story.

The decision has worked from a promotional perspective. Even before audiences knew much about the plot, the Nayanthara-Kavin pairing became one of the film’s biggest talking points.

What is ‘Hi’ about?

The film follows Mayilsamy, played by Kavin, whose search for love takes an unexpected turn after he becomes connected with Devayani, portrayed by Nayanthara.

Their relationship draws both families into a complicated situation, producing a mix of romance, misunderstandings, humour and emotional conflict.

Rather than presenting the relationship as an extraordinary social statement, the makers describe it as a straightforward story about two individuals and the families that become involved in their lives.

‘Hi’ release date and cast

Directed by lyricist-turned-filmmaker Vishnu Edavan, Hi arrived in cinemas worldwide on August 28, 2026. It was initially scheduled for August 14 before being moved to avoid a crowded Independence Day box-office clash.

The film also features Radikaa Sarathkumar, Prabhu, K Bhagyaraj, VTV Ganesh, Sathyan and Amrutha Srinivasan in supporting roles.

Jen Martin has composed the music, while Rajesh Shukla and Philomin Raj have handled the cinematography and editing, respectively.

While Kavin has successfully dismissed one theory, Vishnu Edavan’s mysterious remark ensures that viewers still have something to decode. There may not be an age gap at the centre of Hi, but the real meaning of the director’s “gap” will only become clear as the story unfolds.
