iPhone Ultra Fold Launch Mystery: Apple’s First Foldable iPhone May Arrive in September But Buyers Could Wait Months for This…
Apple’s highly anticipated foldable iPhone, expected to be called the iPhone Ultra, could debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series, but production challenges may delay pre-orders until late 2026.
The wait for Apple’s first-ever foldable smartphone may finally be nearing an end, but fans hoping to grab one immediately after launch could face an unexpected hurdle.
Apple Inc. is reportedly preparing to introduce its first foldable iPhone, expected to be called the iPhone Ultra, during its September 2026 launch event alongside the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
However, getting your hands on the futuristic device may not be easy. According to supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, manufacturing challenges could push the pre-order timeline into the fourth quarter of 2026, meaning customers may have to wait several weeks after the official announcement before placing their orders.
Apple’s Foldable iPhone Could Repeat iPhone X History
Apple has faced launch delays with major products before. The most famous example came in 2017 when the company unveiled the iPhone X during its September event, but pre-orders started almost a month later due to production difficulties.
Industry observers believe Apple could follow a similar approach with its first foldable smartphone, prioritising manufacturing stability over rushing units into the market.
iPhone Ultra Fold Design: Almost Like a Pocket-Sized iPad?
Leaks and supply chain reports suggest that the iPhone Ultra could feature a book-style foldable design, similar to devices already available from rival smartphone makers.

The device is expected to feature:
- A 5.5-inch external display for regular smartphone use
- A larger 7.8-inch internal folding screen
- A 4:3 aspect ratio display that resembles a compact tablet experience
- A slim profile measuring under 5mm when unfolded
When opened, the foldable iPhone could offer a screen size close to the iPad mini, creating a new category between smartphones and tablets.
One major design change could be the return of Touch ID instead of Face ID. Reports suggest Apple may avoid the TrueDepth camera system because the technology requires more internal space, which could be difficult to fit inside an ultra-thin foldable body.

iPhone Ultra Price Could Surprise Buyers
The biggest surprise may come with the price tag.
The upcoming foldable iPhone is expected to cost between $2,299 and $2,499, which translates to approximately Rs 2.19 lakh to Rs 2.38 lakh in India.
If these estimates are accurate, the iPhone Ultra would become the most expensive iPhone ever launched by Apple.
The premium pricing indicates that Apple is likely targeting a smaller group of buyers who want cutting-edge technology rather than competing directly with traditional flagship smartphones.
Limited Supply Could Create a Waiting Game
According to estimates, suppliers may produce around 7 to 8 million foldable iPhone units during 2026. This number is significantly lower compared to the expected shipments of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models.
Due to limited availability, early buyers could face shipping delays of four to six weeks or even longer after pre-orders begin.
Experts also warn that limited stock could create opportunities for resellers to charge premium prices, especially during the initial launch period.
Apple Enters a Growing Foldable Smartphone Battle
The foldable smartphone market is no longer new. Companies like Samsung Electronics, Google, OPPO, Huawei, and Honor have already launched foldable devices.
Apple’s entry, however, could significantly change the segment. The company has historically entered markets later but often reshaped consumer expectations with its design, software integration, and ecosystem approach.
The iPhone Ultra could become one of Apple’s most important launches in years — but for fans waiting to own the first foldable iPhone, patience may be the biggest requirement.
