ICC Reveals 2027 ODI World Cup Timeline as 14-Team Format Returns After 12 Years; South Africa Set for Historic Hosting Role
The 2027 Cricket World Cup is expected to run from October 4 to November 21, with South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia sharing hosting duties as the tournament expands beyond 10 teams once again.
The countdown to the next ICC Cricket World Cup has officially begun, with the International Cricket Council (ICC) finalising a tentative schedule window for the 2027 edition of the tournament. The prestigious event is expected to take place between October 4 and November 21, 2027, bringing back the popular 14-team format for the first time since 2015.
According to reports, the proposed dates received approval during an ICC Board meeting held in Ahmedabad alongside the IPL 2026 final between Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium.
The tournament will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, marking one of the most geographically diverse Cricket World Cups in recent history.
South Africa to Host Majority of Matches
South Africa is expected to play the leading role in organizing the event, with eight venues reportedly selected to host 41 of the tournament’s 54 matches. The country will welcome the ODI World Cup for the first time since the memorable 2003 edition.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe is set to host games across three venues, including the renowned Harare Sports Club, Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, and the soon-to-be-completed Fale Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium in Victoria Falls.
The new Victoria Falls venue is expected to be completed later this year and will host domestic fixtures before its official inauguration in May 2027, adding another modern cricket destination to the global calendar.

14-Team Format Makes a Comeback
One of the biggest talking points is the return of the 14-team format. The previous two World Cups, held in England in 2019 and India in 2023, featured only 10 teams, drawing criticism from fans and former players who felt emerging cricket nations were being denied opportunities on the sport’s biggest stage.
Under the revised structure, the 14 qualified teams will be divided into two groups of seven. The top three teams from each group will then advance to the Super Six stage, where the race for semifinal spots will intensify.
Qualification Picture Takes Shape
As co-hosts and Full Members of the ICC, South Africa and Zimbabwe are expected to secure automatic qualification.
However, co-host Namibia will not receive a direct berth and must earn its place through the qualification pathway, creating an intriguing storyline ahead of the tournament.
Further details regarding venues, match schedules, and qualification criteria are expected to be formally ratified at the ICC Annual General Meeting scheduled to take place in Edinburgh this July.
With an expanded field, new venues, and multiple host nations, the 2027 ODI World Cup is shaping up to be one of the most inclusive and exciting editions in modern cricket history.
