The row began after Trump, speaking in an interview with Italian broadcaster La7 TV, made a series of striking remarks about his interaction with Meloni. He claimed that the Italian Prime Minister had “begged” him for a photograph during the summit and suggested that she was “probably happy” he even spoke to her.
Trump further added that Meloni was eager for the picture and said: “She wanted a picture with me so badly… I felt sorry for her.” The comments immediately triggered backlash in Italy and beyond.
