Ajit Agarkar set to end chief selector tenure? From Asian Games gold to back-to-back T20 World Cup triumphs…
Since Ajit Agarkar took charge of India’s senior men’s selection committee in July 2023, the team has collected major trophies across formats while navigating a significant transition in players and leadership.
Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as chairman of the Indian men’s selection committee has coincided with one of the most trophy-laden periods for Team India, featuring major international titles, leadership changes and the emergence of a new generation of players.
Agarkar was appointed chairman of the senior men’s selection committee in July 2023, taking over one of the most scrutinised positions in Indian cricket.
Now, his stint could be approaching its conclusion. According to reports, Agarkar has informed the BCCI that he does not intend to continue after his current term ends on October 4, 2026.
If his reported decision stands, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will have to begin the process of choosing a new chairman for the selection committee.
From Asian Games gold to major ICC titles
When Agarkar assumed the role in 2023, India had not won a senior men’s ICC trophy for around a decade.
Success arrived quickly.
India captured the men’s cricket gold medal at the 2023 Asian Games and also won the 2023 Asia Cup.
The 2023 ODI World Cup brought India agonisingly close to another major title. The team reached the final after an impressive campaign but was beaten by Australia in the title clash.
The long wait for an ICC trophy finally ended in 2024, when India lifted the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
More silverware followed in 2025, with India winning the ICC Champions Trophy, giving the team consecutive ICC tournament victories.
India then added another landmark achievement in 2026, retaining the Men’s T20 World Cup after defeating New Zealand in the final.
The result made India the first team to successfully defend the Men’s T20 World Cup title.
Five major titles during Agarkar’s tenure
The period since Agarkar became chief selector has featured an impressive collection of trophies for the Indian men’s side:
- Asian Games men’s cricket gold – 2023
- Asia Cup – 2023
- ICC Men’s T20 World Cup – 2024
- ICC Champions Trophy – 2025
- ICC Men’s T20 World Cup – 2026
India also finished as runners-up at the 2023 ODI World Cup.
While trophies are won by the players and coaching staff on the field, the selection committee plays a significant role behind the scenes in determining squads and helping shape the team across formats.
Big leadership changes under Agarkar-led selection panel
Agarkar’s tenure has not only been about trophies. It has also coincided with a substantial transition in India’s leadership structure.
As senior players gradually moved away from certain formats, the selectors were tasked with identifying players capable of taking on greater responsibility.
Shubman Gill has emerged as a major figure in that transition, taking charge as India’s Test and ODI captain.
Shreyas Iyer, meanwhile, has been handed leadership responsibilities in T20Is and for India’s campaign at the 2026 Asian Games.
These changes reflect the broader challenge faced by the selectors: preparing for the future without disrupting a team expected to compete for trophies immediately.

Another defining feature of this period has been the introduction and development of younger players in the national setup.
Names including Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Prince Yadav and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi have featured alongside established international players in India’s 2026 squads.
The transition has also been visible in Test cricket.
Players such as Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal, Gurnoor Brar, Harsh Dubey and Manav Suthar have been part of the wider Test setup, highlighting the selectors’ efforts to develop depth for the years ahead.
