Sensex Surges 965 Points, Nifty Ends Above 24,300: 4 Reasons Behind Friday's Stock Market Rally
Indian stock markets rallied sharply on Friday as strong corporate earnings and gains in IT and banking stocks pushed the Sensex up 965 points despite weak global markets.

Mumbai: Indian benchmark indices staged an impressive comeback on Friday, shrugging off weak global cues to end the week with solid gains. The Sensex jumped 965 points to close at 78,151, while the Nifty 50 climbed 262 points to settle above the 24,300 mark, reflecting renewed investor confidence driven by corporate earnings and buying in heavyweight stocks.

The rally came at a time when several Asian markets witnessed heavy selling amid concerns over the escalating Iran-US geopolitical tensions and rising crude oil prices. Despite the external pressure, domestic investors remained focused on encouraging earnings and sector-specific strength.

Heavyweight stocks such as Tech Mahindra, TCS, Reliance Industries, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Infosys, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Axis Bank led the gains, with several stocks advancing as much as 4%.

Meanwhile, Sun Pharma, Bharti Airtel, Trent and UltraTech Cement ended the session in the red.

Although benchmark indices rallied sharply, the broader market remained relatively subdued, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indices slipping marginally. Market volatility also stayed elevated as India VIX rose around 3%.

What Powered Friday’s Market Rally? Here Are the Four Biggest Reasons

1. IT Stocks Sparked the Biggest Momentum

The technology sector emerged as the biggest driver of the day’s rally after Tech Mahindra reported stronger-than-expected quarterly earnings.

The company posted a healthy year-on-year rise in net profit, strengthening confidence that India’s IT sector could be entering another phase of earnings growth. Positive commentary from global brokerages further lifted sentiment across the sector.

Adding to the optimism, HCLTech announced a long-term partnership expansion with The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America, focusing on AI-driven digital transformation, reinforcing expectations of sustained demand for IT services.

The Nifty IT Index ended nearly 2% higher, making it the best-performing sector of the day.

2. Strong Q1 Earnings Lifted Investor Confidence

Corporate earnings remained at the heart of investor optimism.

Shares of Reliance Industries, led by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, gained ahead of the company’s quarterly earnings announcement. Investors expect healthy performance supported by its energy and digital businesses.

Another standout performer was Jio Financial Services, whose shares rallied after the company reported a remarkable 155% year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit for the first quarter.

Private banking stocks also attracted significant buying as investors positioned themselves ahead of their quarterly earnings announcements.

3. Stronger Rupee Boosted Market Mood

The Indian rupee appreciated against the US dollar during early trade, providing another positive trigger for equities.

A stronger domestic currency generally improves foreign investor sentiment and eases concerns around imported inflation.

According to Jateen Trivedi, Vice President and Research Analyst at LKP Securities, investors will continue tracking crude oil prices, foreign investment flows and geopolitical developments for further market direction.

4. Technical Indicators Pointed Towards a Breakout

Market experts also attributed the rally to a technical breakout after several sessions of sideways movement.

According to Anand James, Chief Market Strategist at Geojit Investments, the benchmark indices had formed a narrowing trading pattern, creating conditions for a breakout move.

While the breakout appears encouraging, analysts believe short-term volatility could continue before the market establishes a clear trend.

Why Investors Should Still Stay Cautious

Despite Friday’s impressive gains, market experts advise against excessive optimism.

VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, believes Indian equities may continue trading within a range over the coming sessions.

He noted that weakness in the rupee during recent days and continued foreign institutional investor (FII) selling remain important risks. Rising US bond yields have also affected overseas fund flows into Indian markets.

Additionally, investors will closely monitor quarterly earnings from Reliance Industries and major private sector banks, as their performance could significantly influence market sentiment in the coming week.

Market Outlook

Friday’s rally demonstrated the resilience of Indian equities even amid challenging global conditions. Strong earnings, healthy participation from IT and banking stocks, and improving domestic fundamentals provided enough support to offset global uncertainty.

However, analysts believe upcoming corporate earnings, foreign investment trends, crude oil prices and geopolitical developments will continue to determine the market’s direction in the near term.
